  • Relaxed park with river access, a fishing pond and nature trails
  • A five-minute drive from central Cotulla’s Brush Country Museum
  • Pool, play area, foosball, board games, dog run and clubhouse with TV
Stetsons at the ready: southern Texas’ Cotulla Camp Resort is calling your name. This park with a fishing pond circled by trails for bird and wildlife viewing could be your next stop after getting a glimpse of the Statue of a Half-Eaten Watermelon in St Dilley 20 minutes’ drive away... Set right off I-35, the spot is a convenient place for resting a night or two, but also has the amenities you need for a full vacation should you choose to stay longer. Spend yours by the pool or down at the Nueces River – the water is accessible straight from the grounds. If it’s hot out, hide at the clubhouse with its big-screen TV, board games and foosball; back outside there’s a playground for the kids. If the smaller travellers in your crew are of the furry variety, the enclosed off-leash dog run is sure to get them barking with approval. For picking up essentials, head to the park’s store (open from 9am to 6pm) or drive into Cotulla’s centre (five minutes). Fresh coffee is served at reception in the mornings and the town has a handful of restaurants and bars to check out when it’s time to eat and drink. If you’re at Cotulla Camp Resort on Sundays, settle in front of the football games shown on the TV during one of the organized gatherings for fans (and make sure to try some of the tasty snacks served up).

Local attractions

Kick off your trip by getting to grips with local history at Brush Country Museum (five minutes’ drive), then mosey to Martinez Park (10 minutes) so the kids can skip around the skate park, soccer field and playground. Up for some hunting, biking and wildlife watching? Texas’ big ol’ Chaparral Wildlife Management Area (half an hour) has 15,200 acres’ worth of brushland for expeditions, while fishing fans should head to Lake Casa Blanca (an hour and 15 minutes) and angle for largemouth bass weighing up to 8 pounds. If the kids are keen on animals, take them to San Antonio for the zoo (an hour and 25 minutes) or let budding young scientists learn all about their favorite subject at the Imaginarium of South Texas (an hour). Not far from here is the Six Flags Fiesta Texas Theme Park (an hour and a half), and once your adrenaline’s sky-high from the rides, seek out a natural thrill while watching the Frio bat flight (an hour and 40 minutes). This phenomenon, where bats fly out of caves during dusk en masse and at top speed, is genuinely awe-inspiring.
