Electric grass tent pitch (medium)

Liked: Lovely clean site, stunning clean toilet block. Nice tiered site. Reception well stocked. No hesistation to book again. Good signal with Vodafone/Lebara

Disliked: Just the usual British Weather. Didnt have a dedicated Kids Play Area. Which seemed a shame

Disliked: pitch 51a on a slope and on its own Much better tent pitches on outskirts of site

From the manager: Thank you for your kind words, we're glad you enjoyed the location and facilities. I think P51a is a bit like marmite - people either love that it's away on it's own or they don't... and it isn't the flattest of pitches, fair comment but if you position yourself right, it can be lovely. We hope to see you another time, maybe request your preferred pitch on booking, and we'll see what we can do 😊 Kind Regards, Team PYB

Celyn 2 bedroom safari tent (no pets)

Liked: I liked the location

Disliked: We payed 180 a night for the safari tent and we stayed for 3 nights. On our way to the site we received a email saying the tv wasn’t working However they had ordered cables and someone was coming out the following day. However this didn’t happen. So for all our stay we had no tv which we payed for. We asked someone to look at our tv and no one knew what to do. I asked them for the wireless code which you have to pay for. This was given to us for free. If I had to pay I would be asking for a refund as it didn’t work. My daughter went to reception about the wireless and the man said every one was using it and there was nothing he could do. The tv wouldn’t have been a problem if there was entertainment on site to occupy two young children, however there wasn’t. We managed to get the tv working using my own Wi-Fi for the 3 nights which I was charged for by my own mobile provider. I told the owner i would like a refund for the issues above I explained I had used my own Wi-Fi which I was charged for by my mobile provider and I have payed 180 pound a night. The owner offered me 50 then 60 pound. I was shocked and upset so I just excepted this because she repeatedly told me she had done what she could. The shower blocks were blocked twice so I had the two other shower cubicles water running in to my cubicle. 180 pound a night is a lot of money however I don’t mind paying that if everything is in working order. To only offer 20 pound discount on each night is insulting with how much we payed. I will not be returning and I certainly won’t be recommending this site to family and friends.

From the manager: We're glad you enjoyed the location here at Pen Y Bont Touring Park. With regards to your comments regarding the issue with the television over the weekend, please allow me to convey our side of the story. On the day before you were due to arrive, we had a freak power cut for a few seconds which initially we thought nothing of. However, the following morning a guest staying in one of our Shepherd's Huts made us aware that their television was no longer picking up any signal from the satellite. We are not trained TV or electrical engineers and only know as much as the next person but will always try everything within our capability to try and rectify the situation. Unfortunately, we couldn't work out what was wrong so we tried to contact our usual engineer and he told us he would visit on Saturday morning to try and help. Because of this issue, we decided to check the other units (glamping tents) and found that these were also faulty, but wouldn't actually switch on at all. Again, we tried all we could, even ordering new mains cables to arrive next day to try this option. Emails were sent to all guests concerned, apologising and making them aware of the situation. We were let down by our TV engineer who didn't turn up on Saturday, but our Maintenance man came in on his day off to try the new cables but also couldn't fix the problem. In all due respect, we don't actually advertise that the tents come equipped with a TV so the argument that you paid £180/night for a TV is not really fair. The tariff covers the fact that we provide all your linen, towels, you have electricity and a pre-erected tent, oven, hob, kettle, microwave etc. We do not offer entertainment on site, but again, we do not advertise that we do so it should be up to guests to research and understand what they are booking. We have a very informative website and social media pages and promptly reply to emails and phone calls with any queries if anything is unclear. Bala is a beautiful area with so much to offer, we would like to think that there are plenty of other activities to keep a family occupied especially during Bank Holiday weekend. Nobody else on site over a very busy weekend has complained of a problem with the WiFi, but we openly admit that it is not the best (which is why we have made the decision to stop charging for it this year) - we are in a rural location, and when at full capacity, it is stretched which is why we are in the process of a new system from BT but this takes time and we are reliant on their engineers to organise this. The issue in the showers was unfortunate but it's the first time we've experienced this problem, more than likely due to the high volume of water as a result of everybody using the showers one after another and the site being at full capacity - the owners and Maintenance team are looking into this as a matter of urgency as we accept this is unacceptable. We pride ourselves on trying to do everything we can to rectify a situation and give our guests the best possible experience - which shows in the majority of our reviews - and to receive a review like this, really upsets us as there really was nothing else we could do and it feels rather unfair. Kind Regards, Team PYB

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Very friendly people on campsite, lovely location too. Facilities were very well maintained and clean.

Disliked: Pitch wasn’t level, not the end of the world but would have been handy to have a level pitch

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review Adam, we're glad you enjoyed your stay with us. Sorry that you weren't happy with your pitch, unfortunately as you booked a non-electric pitch (of which we only have 4) there isn't a huge choice of pitches. Also, as you arrived after the office closed on Sunday evening, we were unable to assist with any changes or offer you an alternative pitch. We always aim to accommodate any changes when guests are unhappy with their pitch.

Really nice stay, close to local attractions/shops.

Local attractions

For those days where you can’t be bothered to walk too far, it’s very handy that the station for the narrow-gauge Bala Lake Railway is just five minutes’ walk away. Views of the water are a given, but count the mountains too: Arenig Fawr, Aran Fawddwy and Aran Benllyn are visible on the route. You may have your sights set on climbing Wales’ tallest mountain, perhaps. If you’re not climbing up Snowdon (an hour's drive) yourself, you might want to take the Snowdon Mountain Railway (an hour and five minutes), which has been making its ascent for over 100 years. A less strenuous trail than the Snowdon climb is the Mawddach Trail, which runs for just under 10 miles from Dolgellau (half an hour), crossing over the gorgeous Barmouth railway bridge on the other end. Coed y Brenin Forest Park (35 minutes) has plenty of trails too, through thick forest this time. You can take them on by mountain bike, standard bicycle or on foot – and there’s bike hire at the forest park.
