  • Family-friendly site in a small, quiet valley of central Portugal
  • A 30-minute drive to Serra da Estrela Natural Park
  • On-site Finnish sauna for guests’ use during winter months
Escape your hectic life with a retreat at Quinta do Retiro, a nine-hectare site in a small quiet valley, 15 minutes’ drive from the town of Oliveira do Hospital in the Coimbra region of central Portugal. Quinta do Retiro is a top spot for active getaways: head to the Mondego or Alva river, each 20 minutes’ drive from the site, for kayaking, canoeing and swimming, or hike, bike or climb the mountains, cliffs and valleys of Serra da Estrela Natural Park, 30 minutes away, keeping an eye out for wolves, boars and golden eagles. Back on site, there’s plenty to keep you diverted: explore the terraced landscape of fruit trees, olive trees and grape vines, wander down to the small river that cuts through the small private valley, have a dip in the ecological swimming pool, or let the kids bounce all their energy away at the playground. If you’re staying during winter, take your relaxation to the next level and spend a few hours in the Casa Mimosa Finnish sauna before taking a cold plunge into the pool. Once a week, sit down with the rest of the guests for a ‘slow meal’ made with local produce – for the rest of the week, you’re fending for yourself in one of the many nearby restaurants. If you’re still hungry, stock up on snacks and other essentials at the shops in Oliveira do Hospital.

Local attractions

While you’re in this part of the country, a trip to the city of Coimbra, an hour’s drive from Quinta do Retiro, is a must. The former Portuguese capital is full of museums, galleries, monasteries and cathedrals and a lengthy exploration of its streets is warranted. If you can only do one thing in Coimbra though, make sure to visit the stunning Baroque library, Biblioteca Joanina, at the university – it’s like something out of a fairytale. Head to the Museu Monográfico de Conímbriga, just over an hour from the site, to learn about the Romans’ history in Portugal through mosaics, sculptures and everyday objects, and be sure to traipse through the grounds to see the Roman ruins… If the kids are bored of museums and libraries, entertain them at Parque Biologico Serra Lousã, a wildlife park and petting zoo an hour’s drive from the site, where they can see bears and reptiles, follow the maze of fruit trees and join in at feeding time. To get a proper feel for Portuguese life, take a trip to the scenic hillside villages of Piódão and Talasnal, or explore the markets of the Tábua and Arganil regions to stock up on Portuguese delicacies and pick up some souvenirs from among the wares of local craftspeople.
