If you’re picking holiday reads to bring to Whitemead Caravan Park in Wool, Dorset, there’s one blindingly obvious contender: step forward local lad Mr Thomas Hardy. Reread your old copy of Tess of the D’Urbervilles down here and you may just spot a few similarities between a couple of local buildings and certain locations in the novel. Even if literary references aren’t your thing, there are many reasons to plant yourselves at this family-run park in the Dorset village of Wool. Chief among these may well be its easy access to a plethora of transport options: make life easy by leaving your car or caravan on site and toddling a few minutes to the train station or bus stops for your days out. Alternatively, get legs going on the network of local walking and bike paths – heaps of fab attractions are within easy reach on foot or two wheels. Upon your return to the village, reward your efforts with a feed of fish and chips or a restorative pint of local ale at one of the two pubs within staggering distance. Also within a few minutes’ walk are a butcher and a baker (sadly no candlestick maker) where you can pick up fresh food for the evening barbie. Less poetic but no less convenient are the village’s two supermarkets, and the park’s own mini market, full of handy essentials. If you didn’t quite manage to tire your kids out during the day, send them over to the playground, or wander over to the games room for a few rounds of pool, darts or table football. Wifi is available if they need a little bit of quiet time alone to play with gadgetry. The park stretches over five acres so you can always find a shaded spot to settle down with a glass of wine and a Hardy novel (other authors’ works are also permitted..).

Me gustó: There is absolutely nothing negative to say about Whitemead. I found it to be a wonderful site with excellent facilities in a great location for everything I wanted to do. The ablutions were clean, with plenty of stalls and privacy. Even had music playing which I thought was fab! My young children enjoyed that too! There is ample washing facilities for dishes and a washing machine and tumble drier was also available! Additionally the shop was well stocked and a games room was available. The site is a lovely size and felt safe, children happily ran around and played until the quiet hours began and then those hours were well respected. The plots had ample space to set up. The staff were fabulous, polite, informative and on the whole, just nice decent helpful people. I would thoroughly recommend this site to anyone. I had small children with me (5 & 6) but would happily return without children - and I likely will! There is also a play park which the children loved! The transport available (bus/train) is a walkable stones throw away including a nearby pub that offers 10% discount on food for staying there. A great stay at a great location! Beyond happy that I found this little gem!

Me gustó: Showers were emaculate and guest respect cleanness and left no mess. Site mixture of tents and caravans, but mainly caravans on our stay. Our pitch backed onto a field and was lovely, some other pitches a bit more closed in or shaded Location perfect for lulworth cove and durdle door by car or bus. and train station across the road. Also bovington tank museum 2 mins drive.

No me gustó: Heavy rain in night and pitch became water logged. Ground sheets worked but next few days became mud bath under tent. Quite strict on children playing and needing to be supervised for under 14's

Me gustó: Excellent site. Showers and toilets very clean, very friendly and helpful staff. Good pub ‘the ship inn’ opposite and close to bus stops and train station. Buses are cheap and run to Lulworth, Swannage and Weymouth . Nice little shop on site. Definitely coming back!

No me gustó: Wi-Fi not great, but could get it at the Ship inn pub so wasn’t concerned.

Me gustó: Assistance with pitching the caravan onto the gravel hard standing. The advance phone call advising of the change from grass pitch to hard standing due to waterlogged pitched

No me gustó: Having to pay an additional £5 to stay another 90 minutes the day we left. Having stayed 9 nights and paid £315 it seemed petty to charge us extra.

Me gustó: Sunny weather. Friendly staff. Large grass pitch with hedges on 2 sides. Lovely showers with piped local radio. Local pub across the railway bridge. Station within 10 mins walk. Bus stop just on the other side of the station. Very clean and tidy site.

On the edge of the Isle of Purbeck and halfway between Bournemouth and Dorchester, Wool is handily placed for reaching some excellent attractions. Closest to the park are Monkey World and the Tank Museum in Bovington, both within a five-minute drive, 10-minute cycle or half-hour walk. If you’d like to play at being a knight, 15 minutes’ drive brings you to Corfe Castle, a medieval ruin with nooks and crannies for hiding out. Five miles south are the sea and the Jurassic Coast’s most famed attractions – Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. Other options for days out include cycling around Wareham Forest followed by boating on the River Frome from Wareham (10 minutes’ drive), or a trip on the Swanage Railway half an hour away, or – well, it’s safe to say you won’t get bored...
