This rural camping field at Dalkeith Country Park provides secluded pitches on a Midlothian estate, set in 1,000 acres of countryside with gorgeous views over the Esk river. This wonderfully peaceful, basic campsite is spot on for fun camping adventures. There’s great dining and shopping on site too, including award-winning dining in The Kitchen, treats to go from The Larder, and the chance for a bit of retail therapy in Restoration Yard’s stylish boutique. This is a fab spot for family stays, with discounted entry into Fort Douglas Adventure Park, where you can all run riot on slides, climbing walls and suspension bridges. There are safe cycling tracks all around the park, and there’s plenty of room for your dog to have a run around among the trees too. As you explore the estate, you might get lucky and spot shy roe deer, hares and soaring buzzards. With all this outdoor space on hand it may be something of a surprise to hear that this spot is just nine miles from the centre of Edinburgh, with all its shops, restaurants and cultural goings-on. A couple of days in the city are of course highly recommended, but if you fancy a change of scenery you can get to East Lothian beaches in around half an hour or be walking in the Pentland Hills in about 20.

No me gustó: Used as a base for Edinburgh fringe. Quite a walk from main entrance to get to tent and Uber driver wouldn’t drive inside the park.

Me gustó: Location - lovely having a site in the middle of the country park. Great flat pitches. Good pop-up campsite. Convenient for accessing Edinburgh and the Lothians. Good public transport links as well as road access.

No me gustó: Toilet and shower block could do with being cleaned to better a standard. Backs of toilet doors were dirty and shower water just pooled in the doorway rather than having a drain to take it away.

Me gustó: There’s always someone at reception which is very helpful! The lay out of the place us very spacious, it’s great that cars can’t enter the geounds and it was also very quiet when we were there!

Me gustó: It was very safe and convenient park with lots of land for walk and all other activities for children's, plus it was near to Edinburgh city too which we as a family want to visit. Their is a lots of food shop near by too in the main high street which was in front of the park main gate. My children's really enjoyed the trip. Shower and toilet was clean enough yes it depends on eveyeron how we used these facilities.

No me gustó: Didn't like the main gate closed times. It was close 7pm and open in the morning at 7am too.

One of the country's real cultural highlights, Edinburgh Festival is staged in August, and if you want to see any exhibitions or shows it’s best to book online well in advance. There’s lots more to the city than the festival though, and any trip to the city should incorporate the castle, the Royal Mile and Georgian New Town. If you fancy a big night out, this is definitely the place to be, with a huge choice of restaurants and bursting with pubs serving pints of local ‘heavy’. It’s less than half an hour by car, or you can catch the bus (an hour). Days out on the sandy beaches of Gullane or Tyninghame (both half an hour's drive) should be on the cards too, and you may like to stop off at the pretty seaside village of North Berwick as well while you're up at the coast. Energetic kids can let off steam by tubing at Midlothian Snowsports Centre (15 minutes).
