What a splendid spot for a break in the Caithness countryside – the sheltered pitches at Wick River Campsite sit in a secluded and quiet location right on the banks of the Wick River, and yet they’re only a handy 10-minute walk from the various shops, pubs and takeaways of Wick. That setting also means that you’ll be within easy reach of plenty of things to keep you busy for several days – a short stroll into town gives you the opportunity to board wildlife-spotting boats, sample the delights of the Pulteney Distillery or take a bracing dip in the outdoor tidal pool (or the indoor pool if you’re not quite brave enough to face the chilly waters of the North Sea…) This is a site that’s run as a community enterprise, with all profits fed back into improving the site or contributing to local projects that will benefit visitors and residents alike. Stay here and you’ll be supporting a great cause as well as putting yourselves within easy reach of places like John o’ Groats and activities like fishing, golf and coast walks. Facilities on site have been kept to the essentials, with toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a launderette available for guests, and a play park just next door. Dogs are welcome to stay here too and join you for walks along the riverside trails that start just outside the site (these are great for a family bike ride too). A warden stays on site overnight to make sure that everything runs as it should for all guests.

Me gustó: Lovely quiet site. New toilet block being built which looks like it will be amazing. Temporary block absolutely fine, clean and tidy.

No me gustó: Didn’t appear to be much hot water in temporary washing up facilities.

Me gustó: Site owner was very helpful & friendly. Pitches are a good size. Great amenities laid out very well & soon to be even better, looked like a new reception/ facilities building under construction. Good location near the river, unfortunately it rained so wasn’t able to take a walk alongside it. If a family there’s a playground nearby too.

No me gustó: Alternative entrance for vehicles over 2.9m is a bit tricky to find & difficult to pass on. Met another motorhome & had to reverse quite a distance on a narrow bendy road to a passing point. Could do with more passing points. The online system needs to update faster. On arrival our booking hadn’t been updated fortunately the owner was very accommodating & found us a pitch.

Me gustó: The site was very relaxing and clean . We did like the fact that this is a community based project . Although there was work being done while we were there it did not affect our stay and believe when the new toilet shower block is completed it will be a great place to return too

Me gustó: During our NC500 adventure, we stumbled upon this gem of a site and couldn't have been more pleased -we stayed for 2 nights in a tent. From the warm welcome to the thoughtful suggestions for our tent spot, the hospitality was great. The temporary shower blocks were surprisingly clean and spacious. Our kids had a blast at the play park, while the communal BBQ spot added a nice touch. The tidiness of the bins reflected the overall attention to detail on site. While we did encounter a minor inconvenience with the lack of hot water for washing dishes, we were informed that a new shower/sink washing area is currently under construction, which speaks to the dedication to continuously improve the facilities. With a charming town nearby boasting a fantastic fish shop and other amenities, this site offers the perfect balance of tranquility and convenience. We'd gladly return and highly recommend it to fellow travellers. A truly lovely stop along the NC500 route!

No me gustó: Toilets block was not finished there was only 2 portable cabin blocks there was no pot washing facilities and we where traveling with are disabled daughter it was hard to shower her due to no disabled access room

Me gustó: The locationis handy with amenities close by, excellent walkig area for the dogs. the setup of the campsite is good, the future shower block etc. looks amazing. Very friendly staff, very helpful and supportive. The pitches are well organized and most other campsite users are a delight. Your arrive with a friendly welcome, get a handy map with all information you can need. You are surrounded by loads of birds both at the river and in the woodlands around you.

No me gustó: Nothing really, the tent area is a bit on the small side comapred to caravans, this is rather an observation.

I'm unsure what the comment about no hot water specifically relates to, but there was a temporary issue with the women's showers on Sunday afternoon that was fixed after it was reported to the campsite warden. We've not been advised of any other issue with the facilities so I can only assume this is what your comment related to. Wick, of course, is the place to start – you can walk into the centre of town to visit the Wick Heritage Centre, grab a dram or two at Pulteney Distillery or head to the harbour to book a boat trip taking you out among the sea stacks and along the cliffs to see if you can spot seals, puffins and other marine life. Elsewhere along the coast, find the ruins of Castle of Old Wick (10 minutes’ drive) and Sinclair Girnigoe Castle (15 minutes), explore the intriguing stone creations at Hill O’ Many Stanes (15 minutes) or check out the natural rock formations at Whaligoe Steps (15 minutes) and Duncansby Stacks (25 minutes). Of course you can’t miss the opportunity to go up to the very north of Scotland to visit John O’Groats (25 minutes) and RSPB Dunnet Head (40 minutes). While you’re in the area, stop by at the 16th-century Castle & Gardens of Mey (half an hour) or take a detour to Reiss Sands (10 minutes) for a stroll among the dunes.
