Searching for a getaway with action, history and the beaches of France? At Camping Eléovic, a family site in the town of Préfailles, five minutes’ drive from La Plaine-sur-Mer in the Loire-Atlantique department of Pays de la Loire, you don’t have to look far. Eléovic is a haven for the ocean-obsessed – the site is on the shores of Baie de Bourgneuf, where you can get out on the water for jetskiing, sailing, windsurfing and kayaking, or stay on land for sand yachting and sunbathing. Need a day without having to move very far? Eléovic has you covered: stay fit at the gym, rack up the points in pool or pétanque, or go game-set-match on the ping pong tables, and let the kids run off with their friends in the kids’ club. When you’re ready to relax, there’s a paddling pool for kids and a covered swimming pool with hot tub and hydro-massage benches. After you’ve worked up an appetite, head to the on-site bar-restaurant for a sit-down meal or takeaway – during the high season, hang around after you’ve eaten for live music, karaoke and dance. If you’d prefer to avoid the crowds, grab some grub at on-site grocery shop, fire up the barbecue and chow down among the trees, keeping your eyes peeled for the squirrels, hedgehogs, rabbits and birds that visit regularly.

Camping Eléovic is paradise for anyone who loves seafood: at Pointe Saint-Gildas, a 10-minute walk from the site, you can find prawns, shrimp, velvet crabs and spider crabs uncovered by the tide, or you can go further afield for clam digging and mussel and oyster harvesting. If shellfish give you the heebie-jeebies, you can settle down for some good old-fashioned fishing at Pointe Saint-Gildas, casting a line for bass, eels, smelt and garfish. Seafood aside, there’s plenty to do along this stretch of French coast. Head first to the nearby town of Pornic, 15 minutes away, where you can visit the old port, try out the seafood restaurants (sorry… final mention, promise) and head for dessert at La Fraiseraie ice-cream parlour. The city of Saint-Nazaire is well worth a trip too – explore the old port, wander the boardwalk, get a look inside Submarine Espadon at the heritage museum or learn about the history of ocean liners at Escal’Atlantic. If the kids are starting to tire of history, there’s plenty nearby to keep them entertained. Start with go-karting about 15 minutes from the site, venture further afield for Planète Sauvage safari and marine park and Océarium de Croisic aquarium, then make your way into Brière Regional Natural Park for Monkey Forest leisure park.
