Adults-only fishing in the Fens, all year round, on a luxury park surrounded by peace and quiet – it’s enough to have you hooked. Fields End Water near March in Cambridgeshire has been described as ‘one of the best’ by avid anglers who have cast off on a camping holiday there: it has two acclaimed fishing lakes (the Pit and the Pool) crammed with carp, tench, perch, barbell, chubb, orfe and roach, and guests can bag bait suitable for the lakes in the site shop (as well as other essentials like ice-cream and sweets). Not reely into fishing, but brought to Fields End Water to accompany a fishy other half? No floundering necessary for angling widow/ers either: this is a scenic and well-sited park for those who want to ramble around the flat Fens countryside or use it as base to explore Cambridgeshire – and as it’s adults-only and well away from the noise of main roads and flight paths, it’s pretty peaceful too. And, as long as he’s quiet when you’re trying to land a catch, the dog can come with you: the park says it’s ‘extremely dog-friendly’ and it has suitable walkies around the fishing lakes and the five-acre wood, miles of footpaths from it leading into the Fens, bins on site for scooped poop, and even a water bowl at reception for thirsty mutts. Pitches come with electric hook-up and are close to the fishing lakes and the main facilities: a clean, warm and roomy shower and loo block, laundry room and washing up area. Foodwise, Doddington village is about forty minutes’ walk away and has a tip-top fish and chip shop. The local Chinese takeaway will also deliver their large and tasty portions directly to the park. There are several farmers’ markets in the area to pick up your own produce: Ely, on the second and fourth Saturday of the month Huntingdon on alternate Fridays St Ives on the first and third Saturday of each month Ramsey on the fourth Saturday of each month St Neots on each month’s second and fourth Saturday.

Attractions à proximité

As well as the farmers’ markets, Cambridgeshire has local markets to browse, in towns with nifty sightseeing and activities for afters. Stop off at Wisbech after its Thursday or Saturday market to play croquet on the lawn and peer at the Cabinet of Curiosities at Georgian Peckover House, or at Ely after market day on Thursday for the cracking cathedral, one of almost two hundred listed buildings. There are also markets at March (about four miles from Fields End Water) on Wednesdays and Saturdays, at Chatteris on Fridays and at St Ives on Mondays and Fridays. The park reception has colour-coded walking routes to explore the Fens, or venture further by car or bus on day trips to historic cities, market towns and the coast: Cambridge and Peterborough are easily accessible from the park, and further afield you can reach Norfolk’s Broads and the seaside towns of Suffolk. Several nature and RSPB reserves are in the area to spot water birds and other local wildlife: The Ouse Washes, the biggest washland area in the country Nene Washes to see short-eared owls and wagtails The Lodge in nearby Bedford, RSPB headquarters with five miles of trails, gardens and two ancient hill forts.
