“Auld Ayr, wham ne'er a town surpasses, for honest men and bonnie lasses”... We’re not sure if the lads and lassies Rabbie Burns was talking about were called Craig and Tara, but there’s certainly an unbeatable range of fun for all ages at Craig Tara Holidays’ gorgeous coastal location in Ayr. Guests can whoop, whoosh and whizz around the massive indoor pool area - think flumes and slides, plus cool kit such as mini jet skis, pool pedalos and water walkers - or practise their swing on the nine-hole golf course, which (like the rest of the site) boasts voluptuous views across the waves to the Isle of Arran. Craig Tara Holidays is a Haven site, which for the uninitiated means an endless supply of action for energetic types: bowling, cycling, fencing, football and archery, tearing up the karting track, scaling the heights of the climbing wall, or finding out who’s top gun in the laser combat zone. Buy an Activity Pass in advance to save up to 25 per cent on the paid-for activities (although there are lots of free taster sessions too). Wee beasties will go wild over the jungle-themed indoor play area, there’s good old fashioned fun to be had clambering around the rock pools on the site’s shingly beach, and the great kids’ clubs for tots to teens guarantee peace from the dreaded refrain of, “I’m boooooored!”. Young Bear Grylls in the making can even get stuck into the wildly entertaining Nature Rockz activities run at the park. Learn all sorts from bushcraft skills to building shelters and making campfires, and there may just be the chance to try pond dipping, beachcombing or go on a bug safari, too. (Most activities are free but a small charge applies to some.) If you can drag yourself away from the superb sunsets, there’s a packed programme of family entertainment in the Showbar, from games and shows to quality live music; and of course, the food options are fulsome too: a smart Mash and Barrel café bar, plus a range of takeaways offering fish and chips, pizzas, burgers and more.

From south: M74 exit at junction 12 onto the A70 towards Cumnock. Follow the signs for Ayr. Go south towards Stranraer. Then as above from Bankfield roundabout.

Right next door to Craig Tara Holidays is Heads of Ayr Farm Park, which is filled with rides, slides and creatures both domestic and exotic. Three miles on, you’ll find the Burns National Heritage Park, where you can visit the cottage built by the Bard of Scotland’s father, and brush up on Burns’ life and loves in the museum; and a few miles further is Culzean Castle, set in a beautiful coastal location with a deer park and smugglers’ caves, and offering activities such as ranger walks and birdwatching. Golf aficionados will relish the opportunity to conquer one of the legendary championship courses in the area - visitors have the pick of Royal Troon, Prestwick or Turnberry, as well as loads of great municipal courses around and about. If traipsing around after a little white ball is not your thing, there’s bound to be something else nearby that will suit you to a tee: take a day trip to enchanting Edinburgh to hit the sights, shops, cafés and restaurants; head for beautiful, beachside Bamburgh Castle or the vibrant fishing harbour of Seahouses, where you can pick up a bird- or seal-watching trip to the Farne Islands; or take a history tour at Alnick Castle and Gardens, where Harry Potter buffs can location-spot and you can get hands on with some archery. It’s also a short ferry hop over to the Isle of Arran, where there’s wonderful walking around the coast or inland, mysterious standing stones, red squirrels, castles, a distillery - and not a single traffic light!
