Ten acres of native Irish woodland edged by an ancient ring fort and pure camping in serious eco style – on the south side of the famed Loop Head Peninsula? Sounds heavenly to us. Run by owners Trea, Kevin, their two children, three dogs, three cats, three hens, cockerel and donkeys Betty and Jack, Purecamping in the small village of Querrin, Co Clare, will have you on cloud nine with its sincerely thought out vibe and facilities: it’s designed to let guests experience ‘camping as it should be’ and has a seriously sustainable living vibe (there’s even an electric car charger on site). All overlooks the Shannon Estuary (where you may see bottlenose dolphins a-frolicking) and is near the Querrin shore to flock to for spying winter waders, herons, ducks and geese, and Querrin Creek for a bit of action at rowing, sailing fishing and kayaking. Pure bliss. Among the many splendoured things on site are the ways it’s set up for collective activities: the sauna and shared campfire spots are pretty flawless; and guests are also fervent fans of the outdoor pizza oven to bake goodies under the stars. Wood is available on site for a nominal fee if you haven't brought your own. Purecamping has a choice of loo and shower facilities, both designed for their green credentials: the main shower and loo block has hot water via solar panels and a wood stove, with water harvested from rain and the site’s own well.

Itinéraire

We are situated on the Loop Head Peninsula, Co. Clare. We are about 45 minutes west of Ennis. Follow the signs for Kilrush or the car ferry signs (Killimer-Tarbert ferry). Once in Kilrush, take the first right and follow the signs for Kilkee. About halfway to Kilkee, turn left at Lisdeen church (you will see Keanes pub on the right). Follow the main road (about 5km) as it winds right and left and through a crossroads until you come to a crossroads with Querrin School on the right and you can see the river straight ahead. Turn right and you will see the sign for Purecamping about 200m down that road on your left. You are here - welcome! For public transport options, check out the journey planner with Querrin as your destination. We have a taxi service on Loop Head, Around The Loop.

Attractions à proximité

Might you want massage therapy on demand? Yoga classes and sauna sessions, ditto? Trea is a Satyananda Yoga teacher of many years and Purecamping holds classes all year round for all ages as well as a yoga festival in summer. Once your unknotted self/muscles are ready to surface off site, the surrounding area and Co Clare is a peaceful place with activities and attractions for all sorts (there’s a reason people come here to feel muscles unrelax). As with pretty much all the west Irish coast, locals are rightly proud of the area and its activities: ask Trea and Kevin for recommendations or set off with a picnic on foot for an unadulterated amount of spectacular Irish scenery. In the immediate area, an immediacy for most visitors is delving into the countryside and shoreline of the Loop Head Peninsula. Look here for shoreline wildlife, lobsters, mussels and the best of Co Clare food; the Loop Head Heritage Trail for the West Clare Railway, Doonaha Napoleonic Gun Battery and the Grave of the Yellow Men; and active land and sea activities such as sailing, scuba diving, rock climbing, deep sea fishing, riding lessons and seashore workshops at Ross. Whichever way you go or whoever you ask, you’ll likely find yourself directed to Loop Head Lighthouse, shining out since 1670 and one of the main attractions of the Co Clare coast. It’s open to the public from late May until the end of August (check the Clare County Council to be sure it’s open when you want to visit) for guided tours up the tower and onto the balcony: on a good day, the views to Connemara’s Twelve Pins and Co Kerry’s Blasket Islands are really something rather special. For meals, shopping and a pint of the black stuff, Purecamping is within ten—15 minutes’ drive of four scenic Co Clare towns: Kilkee (7km), Carrigaholt (8km), Kilrush (13km) and Kilbaha (20km). Head to Naughtons in Kilkee for pub grub; The Long Dock in Carrigaholt and Keatings Bar in Kilbaha for seafood; and Murphy Blacks or the Strand Bistro at Kilkee for seafood. Finally, ever tried/watched handball? You may not know this is a Very Irish Sport, but take your camera to Querrin pier to see. Gloves and hand cream very much recommended for those who want to join in.
