Glamping in Derbyshire

Derbyshire is a county with a decidedly rural flavour – after all, much of its land area is taken up with the gorgeously unspoiled land of the Peak District National Park and the southern stretch of the Pennines.

Of course, that stunning scenery also makes this area one that’s very well suited to outdoor stays of all sorts – and that includes some very fine options for Derbyshire glamping breaks. Campfires and cosy beds can both be part of the same holiday if you choose one of these sites – along with the chance to peek out at the Peaks first thing in the morning without any need to set up your own tent.

Our collection of places to go glamping in Derbyshire has something for everyone, from little cabins for two through to family-sized safari tents – read on for our advice on finding the place that’s just right for you.

Where you should stay in Derbyshire

  • The Peak District National Park is a popular destination for hiking, cycling and other outdoor activities – and a glamping break is a fine idea for making sure you’ve got a hot shower and somewhere comfy to sleep after your day’s exertions. The areas around villages like Tideswell and Hathersage are particularly well served for trails, and have the added bonus of proximity to pubs and places to eat.

  • Derbyshire and the Peak District make a great choice for family glamping breaks too – there are plenty of farm parks and other rural attractions around, and lots of suitable places to stay (including some with dedicated kids’ facilities like play areas). Glamping near Ashbourne will put you near the traffic-free Tissington Trail for safe bike rides, or you could pick Matlock for a thrilling cable car ride at Heights of Abraham.

  • No doubt active dogs will be wagging tails at the idea of a trip to Derbyshire too, what with all these options for long walks. And there’s no reason why they shouldn’t join you, as long as you pick something from our list of dog-friendly glamping sites. Dogs are welcome at many of the county’s pubs and attractions too, so you shouldn’t have to struggle with planning days out.

  • Time for just the two of you? We’ve got several adults-only sites to choose from, and some splendid secluded boltholes where you can cuddle up together in a cute little shepherd’s hut and spend the evening gazing up into the starry night sky (perhaps from a bubbling hot tub if you’re really going for the glam end of glamping). If you’d like to add smart restaurant meals to the mix, find a place near one of the larger settlements like Derby or Buxton

  • Speaking of good food, there are plenty of places to find that around Derbyshire, including some great little independent shops in Chesterfield and of course the famed pudding shops of Bakewell. If you’re planning to cook, check the details of your listing to find out whether it’s got kitchen facilities available – or perhaps a firepit or barbecue for an alfresco grill session.

What to do in Derbyshire

  • Walks and/or bike rides should certainly be on the schedule, whether you’re planning to help the kids hop across the stepping stones of Dovedale, pedal along the Monsal Trail or scramble up Kinder Scout (Derbyshire’s tallest peak). Whatever you've got planned, it's handy to know a post-walk shower and comfy bed await at your glamping site. Want to explore thoroughly but not sure where to start? Try our list of the best walks in Derbyshire.

  • A visit to Chatsworth House has to be on the cards for most visitors – the huge estate has a farm shop, a farmyard, and a playground as well as the house and garden themselves to explore. For more great historic houses to look around, book your glamping break near to Bolsover Castle, Haddon Hall or Hardwick Hall.

  • If you’re bringing the kids along on your glamping break, the likes of Gulliver’s Kingdom theme park, Peak Wildlife Park and Matlock Farm Park are often popular picks, along with the chance to venture underground at Poole’s Cavern, try watersports at Carsington Water and tackle the high ropes at Buxton’s Go Ape.
