Where you should stay in the Brecon Beacons

The Brecon Beacons are synonymous with hiking, and there are lots of campsites set up to cater for the needs of walkers. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t enjoy a bit of comfort though – hiking by day and glamping by night makes an excellent mix. The area around Talybont-on-Usk is a good central spot for easy access to all sorts of trails; serious hikers may like to head a bit further west towards Ammanford for wilder and less busy routes.

Family glamping holidays in the Brecon Beacons offer up all sorts of options for activities to fire the kids’ imaginations and feed them on fresh air. Glamping is a great way to make the overnights just as exciting as the daytimes – they’ll be able to do all the campfires and star spotting but also have a decent night’s sleep in a good bed. You can search for family-friendly glamping to find suitable locations, but in general the area around Brecon itself is a good bet for both activities and places to eat out.

All those walking trails mean that this is a glorious area for those travelling with dogs. Both Llandeilo in the west and Abergavenny in the east have great reputations as foodie hotspots, offering up both top-notch eateries and independent shops where you can pick up picnic treats or ingredients for a meal back at base – just check the glampsite listing to see if you’ll have access to a kitchen or barbecue.
What to do in the Brecon Beacons

There are all sorts of walking trails around, whether you’re planning to give your boots a proper workout or just take a few gentle strolls punctuated by pub stops. Among the most popular routes are the hike up Pen y Fan (a great choice for first-time mountaineers), a circuit of Pontsticill Reservoir and the Four Falls Walk at Ystradfellte, where you can walk behind a waterfall.

Beyond the hikes there are lots more outdoor activities to pick from – horse riding, mountain biking, climbing and fishing spots are plentiful. You may also like to try out various watersports at Llangorse Lake or shoot down the high-speed ziplines at Zip World Tower, near Aberdare. Most glamping sites offer hot showers so you can clean up easily enough if all that activity leaves you a bit dirty around the edges.

Keeping the kids busy during a family glamping holiday should be straightforward, whether you opt for simple pursuits like kite flying and blackberry picking, introduce them to pony trekking and paddleboarding or plan various visits. A run around Carreg Cennen Castle is a good choice on a fine day, while an underground tour of the National Showcaves Centre for Wales is fabulous even in damp weather.
