Surfers, swimmers, beach babies and families with dogs – welcome to Par Sands Coastal Holiday Park, overlooking the rolling dunes of its namesake beach near the village of Par in Cornwall. Dog owners, you’ll be pleased to know that Par Sands welcomes your canine chums all year around, while surfers and kite surfers can be out on the waves within a couple of minutes. And families, this is a smashing base for you too, with lots of handy facilities around the site to make your stay a breeze… a play park with wooden climbing frames for kids, a heated indoor swimming pool for those days when the weather doesn’t play nice, and all manner of all-weather sports courts – from tennis to basketball – for days when it does. You can also explore Cornwall’s many cycling paths on e-bikes hired at reception. Back at base, you can keep the kids fed and watered in Par Beach Café, overlooking the sands, or cook up a feast in your spacious holiday home, which comes well-equipped with a full kitchen, lots of room to spread out in the living area and wifi if you can’t wean everyone off their devices.

Any number of beautiful beaches are just begging to be discovered hereabouts, from Porthpean Beach (20 minutes), popular for windsurfing, or secluded Polridmouth Cove, which you’ll likely have to yourselves as it’s a scramble on foot to get there. You can also paddleboard down the Fowey Estuary from Golant for a swim off sheltered Readymoney Cove (all 10 minutes). Back down on the southern shores of Cornwall, it’s easy to spend a day in biomes filled with rare tropical plants at The Eden Project (10 minutes), and you can also have a whirl around the sculpture trails at The Lost Gardens of Heligan (half an hour). Cross to the rugged north Cornwall coast for fish-and-chip suppers or gourmet lunches at harbourside Padstow, or take the ferry across the Camel Estuary for a takeaway meat-filled pasty in Rock (both 45 minutes). For a taste of a traditional Cornwall drink back down on the southern shoreline, pop into fishing villages like Polperro (40 minutes) and St Mawes (50 minutes) to sink a pint of scrumpy cider in old-world pubs.
