It’s not every day that you get to roll out of a canvas covering to views of open fields, before spending the morning pottering around Sheringham or Cromer on the Norfolk coast. Stuffing yourself with tasty Cromer crab is also quite a normal morning routine when you’re staying at Our Garden in Sustead, four miles from the sea and West Runton beach and 15 minutes’ drive away from both Sheringham and Cromer. Family-run and low-impact, the small site is exactly what you’d call a wildlife haven. The pond on site has a merry bunch of wildlife, including frogs, toads, moorhens and sometimes ducks. In the surrounding fields, you might catch a hare passing by. A walk also gives you a good chance of spotting deer. A shabby-chic loo and hot shower form the site’s facilities. Just as you’d expect from such a peaceful country place, there are a number of walking and cycling routes in the immediate vicinity. Pubs and shops are a short drive away (mainly in Cromer and Sheringham, or on the way). You’ll have plenty of reasons to keep yourself very well-fed, what with there being a twice-weekly market in Sheringham and popular seafood restaurants in Cromer. While you might not want to waste a moment before whisking yourself off to the beaches in Sheringham, Cromer and West Runton, take a look at what else is on offer. Sheringham has a golf course and runs events like a carnival and 40s weekend. Its steam train pootles over to Holt. There are also three swimming pools a short drive away.

Turn right after passing the Aylmerton Field Study Centre. The site is the second on the right. The farm house opposite is where the owners live. Knock on the back door (they can’t hear the front). They can pick up guests from Sheringham train station if they are given one day’s notice using the email in the booking confirmation. There’s also a pleasant walk from the Coast Hopper bus top in Sheringham through woods, past Pretty Corner and onto East Beckham.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

Kids with brave bones can challenge themselves to complete the climbing wall and treetop trails at the Hilltop Outdoor Centre (10 minutes’ drive). If that sounds a little too energetic for your idea of a holiday, then you might prefer to spend some time flicking through the galleries and antique shops in the Georgian town of Holt (20 minutes). Former Victorian houses have been transformed into social yards with shops and tea rooms here. If pottering around a pretty – and historic – place is very much your style, the National Trust site Felbrigg Hall, Gardens & Estate (10 minutes) has an orangery, orchard and walled garden. Another National Trust site, Blickling Hall (15 minutes), has 5,000 acres for you to wander around. Finding the prettiest picnic spot of all is just part of the day out.
