Local knowledge goes a long way when planning outdoor breaks. Lodge Farm Retreat is a case in point – these smart holiday pods are in the small village of Thwaite, which (courtesy of the site's helpful owners) you now know is pronounced 'Twyte'. (Place names in Suffolk are trickier than most – who would've guessed that the nearby village of Hoxne actually rhymes with 'oxen?') Pronunciation may not be simple, but life is much more straightforward at Lodge Farm Retreat, where the swish self-contained accommodation units come with their own kitchenette, bathroom, barbecue and patio. This secluded site is set deep in peaceful Suffolk countryside and about half a mile away from one of the owners' favourite pubs. It's also a couple of minutes' drive from the A140 – particularly convenient if you're heading to or from Ipswich (30 minutes' drive) or Norwich (45 minutes).

There are also more hands-on activities here, like a popular paint-a-pot shop and bird handling opportunities at Suffolk Owl Sanctuary. Ready to venture further afield? Coastal spots like Southwold and Lowestoft are about an hour away and are home to gorgeous views, boats and beaches. Bury St Edmunds (half an hour), meanwhile, is the place to go for a spot of retail therapy; there are also views of the town's ancient abbey to admire in between the shopping. Here's some more local knowledge for you – if you're looking for a seriously good tipple while you're here, make sure to try local faves like Aspall Cyder or Adnams beers. Drive 30 minutes down the road to Ipswich (and Briarbank Brewing Company, to be precise) if you want to experience the breadth and depth of Suffolk's artisanal booze; stick around in town for scenic strolls through Christchurch Park or along the marina.
