For those who can’t decide between coast and countryside, Prospect House Farm Campsite might be a very sensible solution. This small, family-friendly site is set among the green North Yorkshire hills and yet it's only a 10-minute drive from Scarborough’s beaches. Pitches here are in a field that's part of a 138-acre livestock farm, and they're all set up to be mighty peaceful. The pitching field is a car-free zone and your neighbours in the next-door fields are dairy and longhorn cattle. It's a popular spot for wildlife too – you might spot roe deer, foxes and badgers as you stroll through the meadows or head out on stone-walled bridleways. Campfires are permitted on site here, so set off for the village of Scalby (five minutes' drive) to pick up provisions from the store (handy to note the village also has a couple of pubs if you'd rather settle in for a cosy evening…) Back at base, amenities include a washing-up area, recycling points and a bathroom block with showers. Days out? Perhaps a hike through Wykeham Forest up to Raptor Viewpoint for the sight of buzzards, ospreys and kestrels flying overhead, or an outing to Scarborough, where you can relax with fish and chips on the beach while the kids dip their toes in the sea or jump between rockpools. And if you’ve always wanted to have a go at surfing or paddleboarding, this is the place for you, provided you can brave the chilly North Sea waters (though surf schools have wetsuits for hire).

Ik was blij met: There was so much to like. Starting with the location- not only was it tucked into beautiful countryside, but the site was just 25 minute drive from Robin Hood’s Bay, 15 minutes from Scarborough and about 30 mins walk to Scalby. We had a warm welcome on our arrival and were pleasantly surprised with the facilities that were available. The showers were hot and much needed after a chilly night in the tent. The washing up station was handy and although we didn’t need the fridge and freezer it was good to know they were available. We made use of the logs and kindling which were on sale for the fire pit drums, it was a nice touch to have them a fire in evening.

Ik was niet zo blij met: Perhaps if the site was busier then more showers and toilets would be required. But whilst we stayed we only had to share with max 3 other tents.

Ik was niet zo blij met: No cars allowed on the pitch grounds so you do need to carry things to your pitch site, wheelbarrows are provided to help with this

Ik was blij met: Only approx 12 spaced out camping pitches on site so a lovely quiet campsite. 2 showers and 2 toilets and pot washing facilities available so only ever a minimal queue if at all. Hot water is available between 6-9am and 6-9pm which is plenty of availability for the showers. Amazing views and lovely surroundings on the farm. Cars aren't allowed in the field but the site provides wheelbarrows to help with carrying your belongings

Ik was blij met: The site was lovely, fantastic views, and the facilities (shower, toilet, fridge, sink) were brilliant and kept very clean. We rented a fire pit and purchased logs and had a great couple of nights. The pitches are a good size and well mown

Ik was niet zo blij met: No fault of the owner but as a new driver who never did hill starts getting out of the site was a bit challenging ha, the car park area does get quite busy it could do with just a few more spaces as often cars were parked behind others

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

Scarborough (10 minutes’ drive) has much more to offer than just sandy beaches and watersports (although both of those are excellent prospects). Other options include the medieval fortress, which has expansive coastal views from the grounds, or the chance to make a splash at Peasholm Water Chute – or an even bigger splash at Alpamare waterpark, where the kids can play in the wave pool and on the twisty slides while the adults treat themselves to a spa treatment. There's no shortage of active pursuits at Dalby Forest (15 minutes), which has cycling and mountain-biking trails (including a World Cup MTB trail), a Go Ape Treetop Challenge and forest Segway rides. Younger children, meanwhile, can have fun searching for the Gruffalo sculptures or building a den. If that doesn't give you your fill of wildlife, head to Filey Brigg (half an hour), where the dramatic headland stretches into the North Sea and provides a home to guillemots and cormorants, plus grey seals. If you strike it lucky, you might also witness the odd whale or dolphin swim past.
