And first-rate facilities on a newly renovated site, near the seaside town of Bretignolles-sur-Mer within 25 minutes of scenic drive from Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez and Sables d'Olonne: Vendée beach holidays are very much sorted at Camping Les Dunes. You might rush to get down to the beach first, a teeny run away at 150 metres, but leave plenty of time too for a splash around the Camping Les Dunes watery options, one of the (many) swish highlights of this lush-looking park. There are both indoor and outdoor pools, both roomy, well maintained and with slides, and a good-sized paddling pool with water games in the outdoor space. Around the grounds, there are fably big and colourful play areas for the kids, and an excellent range of leisure options including miniature golf, tennis, beach volleyball and a multisports court. Entertainment like kids' clubs, sports tournaments and evenings of karaoke, games, shows and discos run from April to August. Camping Les Dunes had a full facelift over the 2015–2016 winter, updating all areas of the park and adding a new amenities block equipped with family cabins and heated in low season. There's a bar-restaurant, a well-stocked shop selling groceries, souvenirs and beach gear, and a TV room and games room. The beach 150 metres away can be reached without having to cross a road, and is lifeguarded in summer.

Set between the fishing port of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie and the seaside town of Les Sables d'Olonne, Les Dunes beach is an utter beaut, made up of a long run of golden sands in the protected ecological area of the Dunes Domaniales de Bretignolles. Surfing and kitesurfing are both popular picks in its waters. Bike rides among this spectacular seaside landscape start from the site: pedal to the traditional market of Bretignolles-sur-Mer, about four kilometres away, or have a shorter run to Brem-sur-Mer, within about two. Looking for a longer run? Make for the local stretch of mammoth La Vélodyssée, the Atlantic cycling route from Roscoff to Hendaye. If you're feeling nicely energetic, seaside town and sardine centre extraordinaire Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie is about 15 kilometres away, bikeable (for the fit) in under an hour via the Route de la Corniche. Within the same distance is Les Sables d'Olonne, reachable by bike – or car – along the D87, and a well-known place in the Vendée seaside and family holiday collection for its zoo, sands and lively vibe (and casino if you're on hol sans enfants). From Saint-Gilles, take the ferry for the one-hour crossing to the island of Yeu; about an hour's drive from the site will take you to the ferry point for Noirmoutier.
