Chuck the car keys away for your stay at Campsite Le Petit Rocher in Vendee's Longeville-sur-Mer, for here you'll be only 150 metres away from a superbly sandy beach and have heaps to do on site too. The covered and heated aqua park's big pool will have all sizes sorted at its big main pool, three waterslides and paddling pool and mini aqua park with toys for minis, while out of the water you could settle down with a book on one of the many sun loungers... The friendly team organises regular entertainment throughout the season too, such as sports tournaments, aqua gym, karaoke, bingo nights and magic shows. A kids' club for ages three to 12 runs in July and August and during the Easter bank holiday. Leisure facilities also include a sports area, a ping pong table, a pétanque court and a playground with trampoline and – we like – a bouncy castle. Wifi is available on site at a small fee, or at the bar free of charge (please note there's limited access for wifi at the bar).

From La Roche sur Yon, head south towards La Tranche sur Mer/Aubigny on the D747. After approximately 13 miles, at the roundabout in Angles, take the D70 signposted Longeville sur Mer. Here, follow the signs for Les Rochers. By train: La Roche sur Yon or Les Sables d'Olonne (30km) By plane: Nantes (110km)

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

As we may have happily mentioned, the beach is only 150 metres from Campsite Le Petit Rocher, so get sandily forth there as soon as you've dumped your stuff. Hiking, biking, mini golf, horse riding, tree climbing, watersports, swimming boat trips are also available nearby. If you do decide to retrieve the car keys, two topping options are within 18km: the forest in Longeville-sur-Mer and Talmont Saint Hilaire with its aquarium and the Musée de l'Automobile. A bit further is the Zoo des Sables d'Olonne, inhabited by around 40 endangered species and 35km from base; the frankly superbe historical theme park Puy du Fou about an hour away, and canoeing across France's second biggest wetland the Marais Poitevin, reachable in about an hour and a quarter.
