Drawn here by the mention of beach in the name? (Just a hunch.) And you can’t be faulted for such logic – Cheynes Beach Caravan Park is a mere five-minute amble from the sheltered beach in the small Western Australia seaside town of Cheynes. And what a beach it is: a fab sandy stretch flanked by the scenic backdrop of the Waychinicup National Park and Arpenteur Nature Reserve and with waters that lend themselves to days of surfing, snorkelling and fishing. It’s also a rather fine spot in which to whip out your binoculars and look out to sea to see if you can spy any of the whales that pass by here in the winter months. Fret not if you’re not here in whale season, for there’s plenty of wildlife to see on dry land all year round. Possums, kangaroos and a range of endemic birds can often be seen on bush walks or canoe trips in the nature reserve; some bolder souls will even wander into the caravan park from time to time. Facilities at the park include a campers’ kitchen and communal gas barbecues, along with a fish cleaning area for those who’ve had a successful fishing trip. There’s also a playground and a shop selling all sorts of essentials including fuel, fresh bread, coffee and local wines.

Lokale attraksjoner

Fishing types, come armed with plenty of kit – there are some great spots to fish from around here, either from the beach or rocks around the shore or taking a boat out. Cheynes Beach is one of the area’s top locations for salmon fishing, and there’s plenty more lurking below the surface too (tuna, snapper, pike, herring…) If you want a closer look at some of that marine life, there are popular entry points for scuba diving and snorkelling trips along the beach. More interested in what flies overhead? Waychinicup National Park, bordering the park, is a haven for all sorts of birds and the folks that come to see them. Leaving the beach behind for a bit, it’s slightly less than an hour’s drive to Albany, to follow the heritage trail round some of the town’s Gold Rush-era buildings, tour the old whaling station and visit the excellent National Anzac Centre. Make a detour on the drive over to take in the artworks along the Chainsaw Sculpture Drive (50 minutes from the park), all hewn from tree trunks by some skilful chainsaw action.
