A lovely, leafy spot close to waterfalls awaits at Camping Sossego Do Jeca in Minas Gerais. This welcoming site, just outside Carrancas, is a few minutes' stroll from the historic town centre, as well as amenities like souvenir shops, bars and bus stops. There's also a supermarket a two-minute walk away (something that's bound to come in handy when prepping meals in this site's communal kitchen). Several things make Camping Sossego Do Jeca tick. For starters, there's the convivial atmosphere: this place prides itself on its mix of travellers, with families welcome to settle in alongside others (there’s a concierge on site, and guests are asked to respect the rules to ensure a pleasant stay for all). Privacy and security, meanwhile, are provided by a wall that runs around the park’s perimeter. And here’s another reason to keep your cool – plenty of shade is on hand either from native trees or the wooden structures specially designed to keep guests cool. That central location's pretty nifty, too. Wandering into town to poke around the old church and backstreets is always an option, but this place is also quite the hub for outdoor adventure. Waterfall swims, cave visits and scenic hiking jaunts are all within easy reach; if you fancy sorting quad biking trips over scrubland or riding a horse through lush valleys, head to one of the helpful tour agencies in town.

The countryside around Carrancas is known locally as 'Land of Waterfalls', and it's easy to see why. Several remarkable rapids can be accessed in less than a 10-minute drive, including the peaceful pools at Tira Prosa (great for open-air swims) and the white waters and rock faces at Salomão. Guests looking for a burst of colour should head a little further afield to Esmeralda waterfall, a spot whose name means 'emerald' in the local lingo (20 minutes' drive), or head for the falls and visitor centre complex at Grão Mogol (30 minutes). Fancy learning more about the local geology? You might want to start locally at the Cave Bridge rock formation (10 minutes). Canyoning also makes a top option for those looking to discover nearby caves and caverns (enquire in town for local guides). The quartzite grotto, underground river and cave paintings at the Zilda complex (30 minutes), meanwhile, should appeal to fairweather cave-visitors. Carrancas is located on the Trilha dos Inconfidentes tourist route: other stops include the colonial architecture at Nazareno (45 minutes) and the historic steam train at São João Del Rei (an hour and a half).
