As you're halfway between the Basque Coast and the Pyrenees, a stay at this smashing site lets you choose between the mountains, the sea and the countryside – or if you're not particularly fond of making pesky decisions, just make the most of all three. The site's handsome local town of Salies-de-Béarn lies seven kilometres away and provides plenty of opps for off-site leisure time with stuff like a casino, a golf course, a cinema and heaps of festivals and events throughout summer. The free shuttle that operates from the site on Thursdays and Saturdays can ferry guests into the centre – very handy if you fancy hitting up the friendly Thursday market to pick up local wines, meats, cheeses or the odd handcrafted souvenir, or spending a Saturday night sampling local cuisine around the town's many good restaurants. There aren't too many distractions at this site – just plenty of lush shaded spots made for relaxing with a book or a nice big glass of vin rouge; for something mildly more energetic, swimming is sorted at the public pool that adjoins the site, where Camping des Salines guests get to splash around at special rates. Snacky supplies such as cold drinks and ice creams can be procured at the terrace snack bar, or you can pick up a few reasonably priced groceries at the on-site shop. Barbecues are allowed too. The vast majority of pitches are shaded (lovely when temperatures hit 38 degrees), and the site's two sanitary blocks are immaculately maintained, housing toilets, showers, washbasins and a covered row of washing-up sinks outside. Laundry facilities are also available to guests.

A short drive away, Salies-de-Béarn is crossed by the Saleys river and filled with whitewashed houses that are decked out with painted shutters, sloping roofs and wooden balconies, and its network of little laneways makes it a prime spot for aimless afternoon wanders. The town also has a golf course, and you can play a round or two of miniature golf in the public gardens there too. The town has built its name as a tourist fave due to its abundance of natural saline spring-fed thermal spas, and has grown into quite the cultural capital with a calendar of renowned festivals and events that run from May right through to October every year, celebrating everything from film to food, antiques, art and motoring. As you're right among mountainous lands you're within easy reach of hiking, cycling, paragliding and fishing, plus a whole heap of whitewater sports such as rafting, canoeing and canyoning. For long sandy walks, sunbathing, swimming and surfing the coves, cliffs and secluded bays around the towns of Anglet, Saint Jean de Luz, Biarritz and Hendaye are all about an hour's drive from Camping des Salines.
