Mon(t) Dieu! One could fill books with what to see in France – and that’s before one even leaves the north coast. If you dither trying to decide your next destination, let UNESCO and its World Heritage status sites suggest one on your behalf – and start at Mont Saint-Michel and its bay. The abbey on this tiny island is one of the best-known sights in all of France (and was the inspiration for the design of Minas Tirith in the film Return of the King, Tolkien fans): overall, Mont Saint-Michel and its surrounding bay see around three million visitors a year. Cleverly, pitching up around the bay will also have you close to the coastline and World War II D-Day landing beaches of Lower Normandy – and if you pitch up at Camping Huttopia Baie du Mont Saint Michel in the peaceful Dol-de-Bretagne countryside, you’ll be 30 minutes’ drive from other top spots like St-Malo, Dinard and Cancale. As befits a site of the bay, Camping Huttopia Baie du Mont Saint Michel is surrounded by lakes and comes with a waterpark and hydrojet benches, and a heated outdoor pool with waterslides and a paddling pool. Guests can cast off for carp at the park’s fishing pond, or get a bit more active out of the water at the pétanque court, tennis court, well-equipped playground, miniature golf, ping pong and games room with pool table and video games. Activities are organised for all in peak season; for cuisine, the bar-restaurant serves takeaways, and grocery essentials are available at the site shop.

Lokale attraksjoner

Have a day each in Saint-Malo, Cancale and Dinan, all with their own flavour. Saint-Malo is the most visited area in Bretagne; walk the ancient city walls here on the west side of la citadelle and take a trip to Le Grand Aquarium before an afternoon/evening in one of the Saint-Malo seafood restaurants. See food also at Cancale, known for centuries for its oysters; get sand between your toes at the four beaches of Dinard, part of Brittany’s world-famed Emerald Coast; and at Dinan, tramp the cobbled streets among the old half-timbered houses of the medieval town. Mont St-Michel Bay sees plenty of sailors and hikers looking for active options on or near the water, but most visitors come to take a guided tour at low tide – up to 30 kilometres of sand can be exposed here when the water recedes – and to seal and bird spot on the beaches and on the island of Tombelaine. Horse riding and microlight flights are available around and over the bay.
