Frankly, you'd probably rush to stay at this Pays de la Loire site simply for its proximity to the sea: it's a piffling five-minute drive from Camping Les Prairies de L'Étang to lengthy stretches of Loire-Atlantique sands (and 20 minutes' drive to the eight kilometres of white beach at famed La Baule). However. Hold onto your chapeau, for there's another reason you should book a stay here. Prairies de L'Étang is under 20 minutes' drive from the splendid walled town of Guérande, hailed by boffins as one of the best preserved of its type in France. (If the kids are chortling in your face at the mere suggestion of such a cultured day, the site is also pleasingly close to the marshes of the Briere Regional Natural Park, which should provide ample opportunity to get nicely grubby.) Between sea and countryside less than 10 minutes' walk from the town centre of Asserac, Camping Les Prairies de l'Étang is a mighty pretty park, in a green and flowered setting and with its own pond where guests can fish. Those in need of relaxing (perhaps after a muddy day at the marshes) have a heated pool and a hot tub to soak in, while those who can't sit still even on hol can take their dedicated selves to the fitness area or volleyball courts. A pétanque court, playground and ping pong table are also available.

Lokalne atrakcje

The beach closest to the site is Pen-Bé, but it's well worth also making the 20-minute drive south to La Baule for its nine kilometres of sands edging one of the most famed bays in Europe. There are beach clubs and beach games here, horses to watch galloping along the sands every morning, and a pony school and horse riding school around the bay if you want to give cantering a go. And then on to the medieval city of Guérande, with its ancient cobbled streets, handsome buildings and old city walls. Stop off at the castle museum in one of the fortified gateways to find out more about the colourful history of Guérande; humans have been here for millennia, so that's rather a lot. Kids of a particular flavour should also feel playful with a look at the Guérande doll museum, in the 16th-century Chapelle Saint-Jean that was once the city hospital. The nearby Briere Regional Natural Park, a huge region of marshes and canals drained by the Brivet river, has 40,000 wetland hectares to roam, pedal or horse ride around, or you could take a trip in one of region's flat-bottomed boats around the main area of the Grande Brière.
