Oh, how lovely looking is that beach. These Spanish sands are in a most shushful and quiet spot in the Creixell part of the Tarragona province's Costa Daurada – and right next to Camping La Plana, open since 1962. But there's yet more. La Plana is surrounded by several white sandy beaches with clean and clear water, so make it a mission to bask/dip a toe in each on every different Spanish holiday day. The comely little village of Creixell is nearby, and niftily set about 15 kilometres from most excellent Tarragona. The site is made up of two zones, the Blue and the Green: the Blue Zone is closest to the sea and has direct access to the beach, and the Green Zone is the part of La Plana with the most peaceful vibe. (Sands or silence? That choice will be the absolute toughest thing you'll have to do in all your days at this lovely little site.) More lovely and lazy times can be had at the La Plana restaurant and bar or sizzling supper on the site barbecue while the kids whirl around the play area or goggle in the TV room. Amenities are relaxedly sorted too, at the laundry room, washing-up area and toilet and shower blocks.

From Barcelona - Take C-32 to Ctra. Tarragona/N-340. Take Exit 2 and continue on the N340 to El Vendrell Oest/Coma-Ruga/Roda de Barà. Follow the N-340 up to Carrer Aneto. At the roundabout, take the third exit and stay on N-340. Turn right onto Carrer Prat de la Riba. At the following roundabout, take the first exit onto Carrer Moncayo. Turn left onto Carrer Aneto and La Plana Camping will be on the left.

Once you're off the beach/out of the water (week two), take the kids/your less mature selves to one of the theme parks within easy reach: the five zones of PortAventura and the slides and pools of the Caribe Aquatic Park; the fab waterpark Aquópolis at Torrevieja, and Aqualeon, the waterpark with pools, tunnels and huge slides – and also safari tours, tigers and bears. More maturely, cultured types might like to see the Museum Pau Casals, once the summer house of the cellist Pau Casals, and should certainly like to see the Roman ruins and other famed crumbly structures of province capital Tarragona. Bike rental is available near Camping La Plana; for under-surface exploring, a dive centre for scuba diving and snorkelling is also nearby.
