What would you choose to do first if having a serene and nature-spotting stay in the Swedish countryside? Family-friendly Pajala Camping in Norrbotten County has direct access to the quiet Torne river, a peaceful place for fishing, hiking, wildlife watching and birdwatching – and then there's the area's kayaking, canoeing and woodland foraging… And then there's the sauna on site. And it's free. (Ja, we did say this would be a serene Swedish stay.) Pajala Camping guests also have the option of playing miniature golf, hiring a kayak or a rowing boat, or casting off in the Torne: when ambling off site, friendly hosts Benedicte and Alec can help with all the info needed. Pajala is set up to have the basic facilities you'll need for a quiet countryside stay, including a small reception with shop, a play area and bike hire. A laundry room and an amenities block with hot showers and toilets are also available. Foraging is pretty popular in these parts too, so bring a basket and get into the surrounding countryside to hunt for wild mushrooms, cloudberries, lingonberries and blueberries. The town centre is a kilometre and a half away if you want to pick up more conventional supplies. Please note that a permit is required to fish in the lake.

Did you know that the Torne is the longest river in all of Sweden at 522 kilometres – and has such a lengthy meander that it contains the border between Sweden and Finland for half its flow? This equals quite a lot of riverside walks and hikes, many a picnic place, and yet more fishing at many a place along the river as well as around its several lakes. Other fishing rivers are near Pajala Camping for more casting off – ask Astrid and Patrik for their recommendations – as well as cycling, kayaking and that aforementioned foraging in woodland and countryside. Pajala a short walk from the site is probably best known for being the residence and workplace of botanist and Lutheran minister Lars Levi Laestadius, who became concerned at the effect alcohol was having on local Sami congregations. The town these days has a museum dedicated to Laestadius and his work; also have a look at the sundial in the town centre and the Kero leather factory and shop. If you're around in July, the Pajala Fair is a must: it's flocked to by thousands and is the place to buy Sami knives, reindeer skin bags, smoked fish and piles of other local products.
