A calm space in a sheltered valley, Aldridge Mill – Wild Camping is bordered by a very pretty iron mill stream on its northern side and ancient broadleaf woodland to the east and south. The stream is easily accessible and has plenty of pebbly beaches for cleaning yourself with natural products and collecting water for washing up. There’s a central firepit here if you're feeling and guests are welcome to have their own small well-tended fires in previous burn spots. too Well-seasoned wood is available to buy on site and food can be picked up in Bampton’s coffee shops, butchers, bakers and local fresh produce store (15 minutes’ drive). The park is set between two small villages, Oakford and Stoodleigh, which each have a local pub. And as for amenities? They’re on the basic side at this park – there’s a double compost loo and fresh drinking water filled from the well at the mill – but an adventure playground is set up for the kids. You could also wander among the woods, keeping an eye out for deer. Seeking somewhere especially secluded, perhaps for a larger group who’d like to be away from other guests? The owners can direct you to some wilder spots further downstream or deeper into the woods. Wherever you choose, the surrounds are scenic, as the valley is heavily wooded and crisscrossed by waterways, with walks for all adventure levels and plenty of wild swimming spots. Please note the lanes down to the mill are narrow and winding and therefore not suitable for very large vehicles or caravans. The owners ask that you take away all rubbish when you go home.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.
Se desejar fazer uma fogueira, o combustível, a lenha e o carvão devem ser adquiridos no local.
Recomenda-se que os hóspedes tragam consigo uma lanterna de boa qualidade, uma vez que algumas áreas do local não têm boa iluminação.

Não gostou: We arrived and when we pulled in the grass was all overgrown, everything was untidy and run down, we were followed in by a black lab dog and we drove in the site and got stuck in the van due to the poor ground conditions. When we attempted to get out of being stuck a gentleman stood and the entrance waving his arms around and then a few minutes later arrived in his land rover by which point we had got ourselves out. My partner got out to talk to him and he was rather short with my partner. Immediately we felt like we were not welcome on site. We parked up on the hardstanding area. We booked to visit with our dog, the black lab would not leave our van and was trying to get in our van etc. The owner didn't atempt to take his dog with him when he left and didn't seem to carr that the dog had not left with him. We left and found a more welcoming site further up the road.

Gostou: We were the only people there! The site was amazing - basic but that's how we like it. Camped next to a bubbling stream with no other sounds in a beautiful valley. The firepit and long drop were great and our dog made friends with 'Bear' the dog, who came to visit. The road just before and after the site was pot-holed and tight for our T4 - but this wasn't a big deal. We'll definately be back.

Gostou: We absolutely loved it here, complete freedom and back to basics. The campsite was easy to find using the what three words location, water and washing up station simple to use, and the composting toilet was as expected (though the climb to it was steeper than it looked!). Our children loved the play area and we spent hours there, but most of all, our dog loved the resident dog Bear! They became good friends and Bear was an excellent tour guide through the woods when he joined us 😝 There were some clear pitches that we obviously popular and relatively flat, and the stream was easily accessed to get water for washing up and washing. A great campsite for those like us who want a field and freedom!

Não gostou: The path up to the toilet was an overgrown, fine for adults but all the plants were just at our 5 year olds height which wasn’t ideal. It wouldn’t put us off staying at all, but would be handy not to have to carry him up the steps!

For varied days out along the coast, tramping over hills and wandering through forests, head to Exmoor National Park (20 minutes' drive), an area that's home to some of the prettiest parts of Devon and Somerset. The Tarr Steps woodland (30 minutes) is one spot within the park that shouldn't be missed, while if you find yourself in the mood for some time at the coast you can head to the well-preserved seaside village of Porlock (50 minutes) or lively family resorts like Minehead (50 minutes). The south of Devon is also within reach here, so days out to see Exeter Cathedral (50 minutes) or relaxing on Exmouth beach (55 minutes) are on the cards. A little closer to home, you could also frolic through the foliage at Knightshayes Gardens (20 minutes), a historic property set in the grounds of a Victorian country house and managed by the National Trust.
