Like the sound of holidaying under canvas with a backdrop of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) peaks? Haste ye to the Y Giler Arms, a traditional country inn just off the A5 (a former coaching route), for tucked behind the pub is a camping field overlooking a lake and edged by the meanders of the River Merddwr. For exercise junkies, this peaceful spot is close to the outdoor-sports hub of Betws-y-Coed (15 minutes’ drive). If you’d rather stay put and drift around on site, the pub opens every evening, where you can be sure of a warm Welsh welcome along with local real ales and home-cooked food served in the lakeside restaurant. Hot breakfasts are also available – just be sure to order yours from the bar the night before – and there are plenty of distractions if the kids get restless, from a darts board and pool table to a variety of board games for you to borrow. Any accompanying dogs are welcome in the public bar and games room, but must be kept on a lead and under close control at all times on the camping field, as it is surrounded by farmland with lots of grazing sheep. And finally, a few practicalities: the site comprises two acres of level pitches, with easy access for towing vehicles. Facilities include modern shower blocks (one with disabled access), a washing-up area, electric hook-ups and water points.

Gostou: Lovely quiet site surrounded by beautiful scenery next to lake and stream. Pub restaurant on site, friendly staff lovely food . Showers/toilets immaculate

Gostou: The pub and surrounding area was nice

Não gostou: 2 wet rooms containing shower and toilet, so expect a wait. Constantly dirty with full bins. No hand soap. Farcical set up. Didnt allocate spaces so someone was in our electrical pitch without using electric. Pointed in the directon of a field and basically wished me luck. Cant park next to your pitch which is a nightmare having to carry your stuff. No wifi. Lights off at 2330 is not enforced. Site was invaded by scousers looking to party and nothing was done about it. 2am there was a huge fight with serious threats made, police called out. Site security or owners nowhere to be seen until next day. Got zero sleep, and had I brought my kids they'd have been traumatised.

Gostou: The views were great and the pitches were good that they had stones, grip.

Não gostou: Showers were in the toilet cubicles and so when two people were taking a long shower I had to wait 20 mins for the toilet.

Gostou: Clean toilets, great space, great location, nice views, use of fire.

Não gostou: Use of music. Wasnt peaceful. Large groups of youths. Small group of inconsiderate people 2 men 1 woman 1 man was kindly asked to lower the music he ignore and hired it then was very rowdy after midnight. Weekend cut short due to this. Could hear vehicles from main road. Tv use yes tv use.

Gostou: Lovely little camp, Good pub!! Area was clean, grass well cut.

Não gostou: Not a dislike as such just a recommendation - nowhere to hang clothes or put toiletries in the bathrooms, could do with some hooks and a small shelving unit for us women who have a lot of stuff 😂

Gostou: Liked everything from minute we got here the staff are so friendly. We had trouble finding an electric hook up as I think we got here last and one didn't work but cosied up close to another van and found a working hook up. The food is amazing high quality nosh a little pricey but worth every mouthful. Daughter liked the games room and had a game of darts. Showers nice and hot next morning will defo stay again.

Não gostou: Some woman bunked in front of us in the queue for food that's not a slur on the site just other ignorant people.

Gostou: Fantastic shower block and toilet facilities. Staff are very welcoming, informative and friendly. Food at the site pub is incredible. The site is well kept and clean overall. Beautiful surroundings and a great quiet atmosphere.

Não gostou: It is a shame there is no play area for the children on site. The facilities did get rather smelly on the second day that we were there and could have been cleaned. Unfortunately, there were a lot of dog owners that left there dog poop around the lake area. Maybe some bins?

Gostou: Toilet and shower facility was very clean, there was a sink and basin and microwave in a heated room also within the same cabin. Small site that was family friendly. Pub was also lovely.

If you’d like to increase the adrenaline levels further, try the artificial surfing wave at Adventure Parc Snowdonia (half an hour), or zipwire over the quarry lake and bounce around on subterranean nets in the former lead mine at Zip World Llechwedd (also half an hour). If you’re keen to mix in some cultural time, explore the rugged relics of Dolwyddelan Castle (25 minutes), or tour the towers and ramparts at medieval Conwy Castle (40 minutes). Nip over the Menai Bridge to the Isle of Anglesey (50 minutes), where you can wander the formal waterfront gardens at National Trust - Plas Newydd House and Gardens (55 minutes) and snoop around the 18th-century mansion. Treat well-behaved kids to sightings of endangered snow leopards and red pandas at the Welsh Mountain Zoo (45 minutes).
