Just simply, what a stunner. Allow your jaw to drop and your bod to get active any month of the year with a stay at Camping Bourg Saint Maurice, spectacularly set among the French Alps in Savoy's Haute-Tarentaise valley. This is one of those sites where you'll have a ball getting out into the outdoors whichever season you're here: in the sunny months, you can hike or bike around the peaks and the cols of Iseran or Little Saint Bernard; head off on a nature spotting trek in the surrounding Vanoise National Park; go kayaking, canoeing, paragliding or fishing, or tackle the local via ferrata routes and whitewater sports. In winter, there are several ski options to pick from nearby, as the site is close to the Paradiski resort, and at the foot of the funicular train to Les Arcs (two kilometres away). A free shuttle bus is available to Les Arcs from the site; just book in advance to get you and your skis to the piste. A few minutes' drive from the Rhône-Alpes town of Bourg-Saint-Maurice, the campsite covers nearly three and a half hectares of flat ground, surrounded by the stunning scenery of the French Alps at an altitude of 821 metres. It's a friendly and a family-friendly place, with a helpful and knowledgeable team, free wifi and a launderette. Outdoors and in sunny months, there's an outdoor pool and a play area to keep you all entertained; in cooler climes (or summer eves), retreat indoors to the cosy common room for table football, TV and lounging on the big comfy sofas placed there for your lazy use.

By car RN90 or motorway (Lyon-Chambéry-Albertville) to Moutiers (towards Haute-Tarentaise), then RN90 to Bourg-Saint-Maurice. Cross the city on the 4th roundabout, head towards Les Arcs. The campsite is on the right. There's loads to do around here whether you want to get fully active with afternoons of paragliding and whitewater rafting, or take things a bit easier canoeing, kayaking or fishing in the waters nearby. If you're more up for French Alps scenery spectating, try the vistas around Mont Blanc, one of the highest mountain passes in Europe. You could also take a cable car to the Aiguille du Midi; pass along the Col de la Colombière, or wander the shores of Cornu and Anterne lakes, all within day trip distance between an hour and a half to two and a half hours' drive from the site. For the winter months, Camping Bourg Saint Maurice is a mere few minutes by cable car from the famed ski resort of Paradiski. The site is also close to Les Arcs ski resort and within easy day trip distance of La Rosiere, La Plagne, Tignes and Val d'Isere. Espace Killy (at Tignes and Val d'Isere) and San Bernardo (at La Rosiere - La Thuile), all about 30 minutes' drive away. Around 425 kilometres of ski slopes are in the area, at altitudes of between 1,200 and 3,250 metres. There are also 46 kilometres of cross country skiing in Peisey-Vallandry, as well as the Half Pipe snow park with snowshoeing, dog sledding, night skiing, skating, a spa and bowling.
