Grownups! If you seek serenity, scenery and nature-spotting on holiday, this is the Shropshire site for you. Adjacent to the mere of Colemere and set on the lake's south side, adults-only Colemere Caravan Park is in a countryside setting on five acres of wildlife-laden land with peaceful walks all around – and a quarter of a mile from Wood Lane nature reserve, which the expert folk at the BBC describe as one of the best birdwatching sites in Shropshire. Owners Dave and Ingrid have put a lot of thought into ensuring that guests are kept comfy at this peaceful and popular little site: as well as a good range of accommodation options, guests have access to a fully-equipped and cute social area, all hand-built and including a kitchen with fridge, kettle, utensils, pots and microwave. Firepits are available on request and guests can bring their own barbecues. And for keeping toasty after that, a Nordic wood-fired hot tub overlooking the lily pond is available to hire in the afternoons and evenings for four-hour periods (couples only). Picnic tables are dotted around to place the campfire food on, and the park has well-kept separate bathrooms for ladies and gents.

Otter campinghytt

Tyckte om: Remote location, adults only so suited us. We had a pod which was great cosy and warm. Amazing walks with the dogs around the lake.

Tyckte inte om: Can’t say the welcome was as warm as we would have liked, yes it was unfortunately a wet day and everywhere was a bit muddy we had paid extra for our dogs and the surprised “Oh are the dogs going to be in there” referring to the pod yes they were and yes we left the pod as clean as we found it.

You had two large dogs with thick coats, that where wet and it was very muddy after the heavy rain fall that we had experienced all week. We are a dog friendly site and there is a set charge for for all dogs to stay on site, regardless of how and where they stay or sleep. My comment was just to elaborate that that if they could dry off before going inside the pod that would of helped. You also stated that they where staying in the camper van on arrival. Tyckte om: We enjoyed using the communal hub - sitting on a comfy sofa and opportunity to chat with other campers - made for a really nice stay. Walks directly off the campsite too were lovely - wish we'd had more time to explore further. Thank you Dave and Ingrid - we've had a fab time!

Tyckte om: The campsite is in a lovely area by the Colemere lake which you can walk around straight from the campsite. You are also able to walk into Ellesmere down the canal. Quiet and peaceful site which is why we choose an adults only. Loved the communal area as it had lots of thoughtful additions. Microwave, fridge and freezer, cutlery and plates, washing up area (in and outdoors) lots of seating, a TV and WiFi. The toilet block was clean.

Tyckte inte om: The only reason for 4 stars is because we visited in early spring. The site is mainly grass and on different levels so isn't well equipped for wet weather as there were concerns about getting stuck in the mud (although we saw they did had a tractor for pulling you out). The toilet block was a bit chilly due to the type of building. This site would be lovely in the summer.

Jacob's herdestuga

Tyckte om: Loved the place, super clean, the Shepherd's hut super cute and neat. The outside areas all landscaped and green, really nice set up, communal room was quirky and with country motived decorations. Accesses are rather easy, and has fairly close restaurants and cafes etc..we were fortunate to have a magnificent night sky we watched from the porch. Really neat! Absolutely worth the visit..

Tyckte inte om: Not a dislike so much but the price could include logs, or/and bedding.. Could have some comfort biscuits and coffees..bathroom way too far.. 😬😬😬Little things over the big picture.

Coming from Ellesmere to Shrewsbury on the A528 you will see signs for Colemere after 2 miles. Turn left at the crossroads and drive to the next junction where the three lanes converge. Turn left on to Mill Lane and the park is 100 metres on your right-hand side.

There's stacks to do in the surrounding area, whether you want to stick close to home by foot or pedal, or drive a bit further afield to the towns, tourist attractions and landscapes of Shropshire, Cheshire and north-east Wales – the city of Chester is 40 minutes away and Llangollen on the River Dee reachable within an hour. On the doorstep, tackle the two-mile walk along the canal towpath to Ellesmere or make your way via the purpose-built circular walk and through a wooded area of rhododendrons around the mere and nature reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest with species galore to see like otters, lapwings and water birds. The reserve also has several deep fishing pools well-stocked with catfish and big carp; more fishing – and carp – can be had nearby at Blackmere along the towpath from Colmere. Also nearby, wander into Colemere village to see the fifteenth-century thatched cottages, listed in the Domesday Book, to Ellesmere for food festivals, regattas and boat rides on the mere, or drive to Rednal Karting, Paintballing and Laser for an exciting time ten minutes away. Castles including Chirk and Whittington are a doddle to drive to too. If being on the water is your thing, a narrowboat marina is a three-minute drive away from the caravan park and both Colemere and Whitemere sailing clubs are within easy reach. By car, the standard of whitewater rafting at Bala Adventure and Watersports will have you foaming at the mouth – a milder form of the sport, along with abseiling, gorge walking, a steam railway and horse-drawn boat trips is available over the border in Wales at Llangollen.
