A castle? But of course – surely you deserve nothing less? Hoddom Castle Caravan Park, in the Dumfries & Galloway countryside a 15-minute drive from the town of Lockerbie, is a fine pick for families and those with an eye for the finer things in life. This is a site that’s been running since 1973, but the history of the place goes back much further than that – the castle in question is a 16th-century border keep that’s the focal point of the 10,000 acres of the Hoddom and Kinmount estates. Other historic buildings including the hilltop Repentance Tower and the ancient St Kentigerns churchyard are scattered around the estate, and the River Annan river flows along its edge. Guests are welcome to roam along walking trails or join the tours run by the estate ranger on selected summer Sunday afternoons. Other suitably regal activities are to hand too: the estate has its own nine-hole golf course and some top spots for salmon fishing in the river. Even the most princely of visitors need to let their hair down occasionally, so there’s also a play park on site.

喜欢: Friendly welcome and beautiful location in castle estate with lots of trees and forest walks, will certainly stay again on our travels northwards

不喜欢: Don't mind principle of paying for electricity usage but I found card system they use to be troublesome and other guests were having similar problems

喜欢: We loved everything but don't want to tell about this lovely site the staff were good the pub was great with Saturday night entertainment great for kids we will be going again very soon

喜欢: Wide open site with many facilities such as golf, restaurant etc. Quite easy access from the motorway if pulling a caravan. Annan town only 10 minutes away so, after unhitching the caravan, you can pop to Tesco to refill the car with cheapish fuel and buy reasonably priced good food (it is a superstore so big).

不喜欢: The only chemical point I could find was next to the Motorhome point - a long walk from the caravan carrying the container. Grey waste and water much closer.

喜欢: Getting close to nature with pleasant walks (not too long as the dog is getting on now), wildlife that comes to visit (loads of birds and at dusk a hare racing around!) and a nice welcome with helpful staff. I spent a pleasant hour and a half on the golf course - its not St Andrews standard but still good fun. I hope the trout in the river are still enjoying the 2 balls I hit in there! All the facilities were functional and clean. Our pitch was level no need for ramps. Some pitches seemed to have small slope.

不喜欢: A bit of a walk to the shower block. The toilet block was close by.

喜欢: Although this site was medium/large. It was very peaceful and the backdrop of the castle setting was fabulous. The staff where all helpful polite and friendly. The site facilities where spotlessly clean. We only booked for one night, but wished we had booked for another. There was pods, caravans,tents and campervans, all catered for. The wee shop was well stocked for every day essentials. Great location, great facilities, friendlt staff and lovely setting

喜欢: We were cloe to the toilet block and the pitches are good and the area is very nice with lots of trees and very picturesque. We will definitely be back, hopefully next week on our way home.

不喜欢: I disliked the fact that we had to go to the castle to shower. It would be good if the toilet blocks had a few showers them. Also the showers in the main block worked for a couple of minutes and then there was no pressure at all and was only a dribble so we had to move showers which was annoying while naked.

喜欢: Such a beautiful site. Veiw was amazing. Pitches were well spaced out. Staff so friendly. Nothing was a bother. Lovely warm shower and toilet blocks. Showers lovely and warm. So fab to have shop on site too! Electric was cheap

If you need a little tipple to sip while you survey your smart surrounds, take a jaunt to one of the local gin distilleries – the Distillery at Dalton is 10 minutes away by car and Annandale Distillery 15 minutes. (Best be saving their [excellent] wares for later if you’re intending to try your hand at horse carriage driving, 25 minutes away at the Chariots of Fire centre.) Countryside visit not complete until you’ve seen all the farm animals? Take your pick from outings to Dalscone Farm Fun (20 minutes away), Mabie Farm Park and Walby Farm Park (both half an hour): all are packed with furry friends that should have the small sorts (and most likely the grownups too) squealing with glee. If they’re more into beasts of the prehistoric variety, detour instead to Dino Park (10 minutes) for a roaring good time among the lifesized models. Fancy flexing the credit card? Get on over to Gretna Gateway Outlet Village to browse for bargains from a whole host of high street names.
