There are plenty of stunning areas within easy reach here, starting with the hiking trails of Tuan State Forest (35 minutes’ drive) and Mungomery's Vine Forest (55 minutes), both expanses of coastal forest that are well worth exploring. For other outdoor activities, there’s some great fishing in Poona National Park (45 minutes) and you can get around on foot or by canoe in Great Sandy National Park (55 minutes). If you’ve not seen all the animals you’d like to see yet, stop by at Fraser Coast Wildlife Sanctuary (half an hour’s drive), where you can feed kangaroos, chat with parrots and learn all about snakes and dingoes. And how about a quick dive into the area’s past too? Make your way to Maryborough for heritage buildings and a Mary Poppins trail (in homage to the author, local girl Pamela Lyndon Travers) or Gympie for steam train rides and a gold mining museum – both are about half an hour away.
