Interesting sites within the Parc naturel régional du Morvan include the Cascade du Saut de Gouloux waterfalls (20 minutes’ drive), deep into a forest dotted with the ruins of ancient mills. Or take a hike up to observation points like the Panorama du Calvaire (25 minutes) and the Rocher de la Pérouse (35 minutes). This forested area was at the forefront of the French Resistance movement during World War II. To learn more about this period of German occupation, head to Saint-Brisson (25 minutes), where the Museum of the Resistance displays maps, uniforms and weapons. Part of the museum, the moving Cimetière franco-britannique de Coeuzon, houses the remains of World War II freedom fighters. In Beaune is a former hospital with an extravagantly tiled roof, the Hôtel-Dieu - Hospices de Beaune, which dates from the 15th century and has now been turned into a wine estate. Check out the historic collection of tapestries in the Basilica of Our Lady, then stroll around this pretty town stopping at wine bars to sample the local Burgundies.
