Enjoy all the very best of Brittany – the sea air, the lushly green countryside and megalithic tombs for starters – when you stay Le Moulin des Oies, sitting on the Ria Étel sea-water estuary in pretty Saint-Cado, 10 minutes’ drive from the patisseries, crêperies and sandy beaches of Erdeven. Accommodation at this family-friendly spot comes in several guises to suit all pockets, from grass pitches to safari tents. Whichever one you choose, first stop will probably be the private beach for a dip in the naturally formed salt-water pool; after that have a stroll to the two dolmen sites in the camp’s two-hectare woodland park. Otherwise, you can deposit the toddlers at the playground, bash a ball around on the table-tennis table, join yoga classes or go fishing on the ria. Physical fun taken care of, your attention may well turn to food; hotfoot it to the terrace bar for a constant supply of homemade ice-creams, pizzas, Breton cakes, salads and burgers – a menu guaranteed to bring a smile to the face of most kids – plus mussels-and-chips evenings every Thursday in summer. Looking for some evening entertainment? You’ll be pleased to hear that regular concerts take place in the high season too. Now the practical bit: handy family facilities on site include modern showers with free hot water, baby baths, changing tables and a washing machine to take care of laundry issues.

To learn about Brittany’s ancient and mysterious past, make a beeline for the vast megalithic site at the Alignements de Carnac (20 minutes’ drive), where there are more than 3,000 standing stones to wander around. You can see several smaller prehistoric relics nearby, including the Dolmen de Kergavat, the Alignements du Petit-Ménec and the menhirs at Kerderff (all 20 minutes). Kids may well demand a day on the sandy crescent of beach at Erdeven (10 minutes), or like the sound of the obstacle course and tree-top ropes at Expéria Park Lorient (40 minutes). They can also have a go at zorbing and zipwiring through the trees at Forêt Adrénaline Carnac - Parc Accrobranche (15 minutes). For family hikes, grab a pair of walking boots to explore the spectacular Quiberon Peninsula (35 minutes) on foot, following the Grande Randonnée GR 34 hiking trail around the coastline. If you fancy getting out on the Atlantic waves, hire dinghies, sea kayaks and kitesurfing boards from Port-Haliguen Marina (also 35 minutes), or try sand yachting along Plage du Fort de Penthièvre (25 minutes).
