Spend your next hol dawdling in the dunes at Camping de la Mer, a seaside site where the sands of Stella beach in Pas-de-Calais are accessible directly from the grounds. Making a quick dash over from Britain? It’s also within easy reach of ferry ports, with Calais about an hour and 10 minutes’ drive away. Once you’ve arrived, activities to get stuck into are plentiful: this prime park in northern France has partnerships with many a local tour organiser, so you can learn to surf, kayak across the sea or take a walking tour of nearby bays in search of seals. More interested in hanging out with horses? An equestrian centre is a 20-minute drive away to the north in the larger town of Le Touquet, also home to a golf course and waterpark. Heading south instead, make for Parc Bagatelle for rides and rollercoaster to suit the younger enfants in their travel squad; the parkland here is also ace for picnicking. Back on base (with an ice cream in hand from the on-site vendor in high season), check in with Camping de la Mer’s friendly staff to get their top tips on the things to do and sights to see in the local area. For extra info, also chat to the chaps at the tourist information office in Stella-Plage town, a 20-minute walk away past the supermarket.

喜欢: Plenty of space, close to beach. We were on our own on the pitch, not sure how much room you would have in the Summer if there were 4 motorhomes on the pitch.

不喜欢: The facilities looked a little bit tired but were adequate.

喜欢: Great location, a short stroll over the sandhills to the immaculate and empty beach. Imagine it'd be busy in the summer, but we had the place almost to ourselves. Not a bad site, our first on arrival in the country for a 9-night stay. Frites/kebabs/hot dogs/beer etc available in a kiosk.

不喜欢: Toilets/showers were very basic - no toilet seats, paper or handwash - in fact nowhere to wash your hands. Showers only open certain hours.

喜欢: So close to a truly amazing beach. The staff were really friendly and informative with a good standard of English, which is so helpful to useless English folk who don't speak an other languages!

不喜欢: The toilet facilities are quite basic and our Sat Nov couldn't find the site but google maps stepped up.

If you’re swayed by the idea of learning to sail, do it on the sand instead of sea at a school in Berck 20 minutes’ drive south of the park. Or is the water where you’ll want to be? If so, a place for renting standup paddleboards, pedal boats and jetskis is around 10 minutes away. Have an ocean experience without getting wet at the aquariums of the Maréis - Sea Fishing Discovery Center (20 minutes’ drive), or go to take a look at the thousands of underwater creatures at the Nausicaá National Sea Center 50 minutes away in Boulogne-sur-Mer. Inland and outdoors is Montreuil’s old town (25 minutes) and the Vallée de la Course (35 minutes), for flitting around a pretty landscape dotted with farmhouses, posh mansions and churches. Castles are (of course) around here too – drive half an hour to Château de Recques-sur-Course to mosey around a stately Louis XV-style structure.
