It's not just the fab waterpark that will have your offspring excited with a stay at Camping L'Orée du Bois. It's also only a few minutes' walk from here – even for little legs – to another fab family spot in the Indian Forest treetop adventure park, a couple of hundred metres away from the site's wooded setting in the Forest of la Coubre. More family days are within easy reach at the Luna Park funfair, where rides and slides are set up 500 metres from the site in summer, and at the local strip of golden and sandy Atlantic beaches within a few minutes' drive. The thousands of critters of famed La Palmyre Zoo await a few minutes away too; discount tickets are available at the site reception. But… back to that on-site waterpark. The spectacular and heated aquatic area of L'Orée du Bois covers 2,000m² of water and slides, bridges, a paddling pool and a Jacuzzi corner, all among palm trees and greenery. It's part of a park that's firmly family friendly, with free clubs for kids and teenagers, organised activities during the day and evening for all ages, and a pétanque court, playground, and TV and games room. Also around – perhaps while the kids and teens are fully occupied at the summer clubs – is a summer spa for grownups, with spa, sauna, hammam and a private space for two people if you want to pamper in peace. The summer bar, restaurant and pizzeria sorts out food for all from a menu including fish, mussel and oysters.

The Indian Forest treetop adventure park of Les Mathes a few minutes' walk from the site has 170 climbing routes, while the truly adventurous can try the Crazy Jump leap, freefalling almost four metres from a platform 15 metres up. The 1,600 or so animals of La Palmyre Zoo live around seven kilometres away, set over a vast expanse in the forest. Also in the forest, take to two wheels on the scenic bike paths through the trees, part of the spectacular La Vélodyssée long-distance trail running over 1,200 kilometres from Brittany to the Atlantic coast and the border with Spain. Mountain bike, horse riding trails and the GR 4 hiking trail are at your disposal too. Lively Royan 20 kilometres away is home to a casino, five beaches and the start of the Gironde estuary: book a boat and birdwatching tour around the local marshes from town.
