You don't need to be a superhero to stay at splendidly eco-friendly Camping DéfiPlanet' in the Vienne, says its team; all you need is a hankering for saving the planet and preserving the natural environment. DéfiPlanet is the biggest holiday village in France, as well as a leisure park with activities and events for visitors to take part in during their stay or on a day entry. Covering 47 hectares, it has a vast range of stuff to do for active or relaxed superhero breaks, and a magic forest where resident elves and leprechauns greet small adventurers. Grownups can boldly go where they haven't before and spend some time venturing gallantly into the heated pool complex, and then to the snack bar alongside for superhero fuel... or get stuck into the loads of other outdoor options on site such as horse riding, high ropes, archery and miniature golf – some free and some available for a few extra superhero coins. A champion range of choices is around for eats of other sorts, including a table d’hôtes grill, a weekend gourmet restaurant, the more budget Elves' Cauldron restaurant, and the splendid Elves' Grill, where groups of up to eight can have platters of meat, fish and other tasty treats delivered to a wooden chalet to grill on the central barbecue table. Barbecue packs, takeaways and breakfasts delivered right to your door are all available too.

The superstar setting of Camping DéfiPlanet is a few minutes' drive or quick bike ride from Dienne, and about half an hour from Poitiers. As the second oldest university town in France (after Paris), Poitiers has a lively nightlife and a busy calendar of cultural activities and social events. It's a fine old town to potter around by day too, taking one of the three coloured circuits (red, yellow or blue) around famed sights like the baptistry, cathedral and church of Notre-Dame, the historic centre, and around the Parc de Blossac. Pick up info on all three trails at the Poitiers tourist office, next to the cathedral. This is a smashing setting for kids and families too, with three big and fab attractions within a short drive: Crocodile Planet, 15 minutes away, Valley of the Monkeys, within 40, and the famed theme park Futuroscope, reachable in 35 minutes via the N147.
