Friendly by name, friendly by nature – ‘the hosts treat you as one of the family’ at Domaine de L’Amitié, says one very pleased previous guest... But it’s not just the warm welcome that draws folk to this peaceful place on the banks of the Var river a 10-minute walk from the petite village of Touët-sur-Var. For starters, there’s the rather fab location, between the Mercantour National Park and the Préalpes d’Azur Regional Natural Park (both tiptop regions for hiking, mountain biking, rafting, climbing and the like) and around an hour’s drive from the coastal resorts of the French Riviera. And on top of that, there’s the excellent collection of facilities.... Horsey types (aged seven and over) will be chuffed to see an equestrian centre on site; accompanying non-riders (or those whose muscles need a little post-activity soothing) can slope off to the spa to relax in the sauna, Jacuzzi or Turkish bath... or be pummelled by a masseur. When not trotting about or being pampered, guests can play games of pétanque, head into the cosy games room to play table football, billiards or table tennis, or fling themselves into the river for a swim au naturel. There’s also a playground with trampoline for bouncy bambini, and a restaurant that’s open all day for meals, snacks and drinks (on the flower-filled terrace if the weather decrees it possible).

This is an excellent area for busy bees who like to get active on hols – the village of Touët-sur-Var has a bunch of courts for playing tennis, football and volleyball, and guests can also paddle off on canoeing or rafting tours from here too. Climbing, canyoning, summer tobogganing and caving are all within half an hour of here, too – ask the friendly folk on site for details. It’s also worth having a chat with the hosts for advice on fave walks or bike rides nearby – maybe around the Entrevaux citadel (20 minutes’ drive away) or up in the Mercantour National Park (half an hour away). For a blast of sea air and city life, it’s about an hour's drive to Nice for the beach, admiring the art at the Matisse and Chagall museums or strolling along the seafront Promenade des Anglais to rub shoulders with some of the city’s fashionable folk.
