For outdoorsy days, set off on intrepid explores of the Alpilles on foot, via a network of hiking trails that cross scenically over cypress-hedged olive groves, vineyards, marshes, pine forests and Mediterranean scrubland. If you’re partial to a pedal, hire kids’ and adults’ mountain bikes on site to cycle further out to historic local hotspots like the medieval Château des Baux, Glanum archaeological site and the Daudet mill, or to natural landmarks like disused quarries, an artificial lake and a network of Roman waterways. Hot air balloon rides are available locally too, to see you drift colourfully skywards over the lush lands below, or you can hire a vintage car for the day for zooms around the local country roads. If you’re of a golfing persuasion, zip along to the 18-hole golf course a short drive or bike ride away from the site.
