If you're after a calm family stay in a quiet and spectacularly scenic coastal area, you could do a lot worse than to hit up Camping Casa Dei Prati. On the southern coast of Elba facing the bay of Lacona, the site is a very easy drive or bus journey from Portoferraio, Capoliveri and Porto Azzurro, and is well away from the noise of any busy roads. Lacona beach is a 10-minute stroll away along a quiet dirt road; for when you're loaded up with picnic goodies and all the usual beach paraphernalia, the site's own beach bus will shuttle you to and from the seaside instead. For trips to other seaside spots, the local bus service 50 metres from the site can land you at other beach resorts around this part of coast. Pitches on this friendly family-run property are spacious and under the pleasant partial shade of eucalyptus and pine trees. There's a good range of facilities too, such as a hot tub to sink into, a volleyball court for gently active hours, and a big pool for grownup and junior splashing. When they're out of the water, kids will be kept well occupied by the site's programme of activities (available between mid June and mid September) and roomy playground. Lacona town has a mini market, a newsagent, bakeries and pastry shops, ice cream parlours, coffee shops and a fishmonger, to sort most of what you should need; there's also a splendid outdoor food market on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings during summer.

Around here, you're never too far from a beach or four. Lacona bay, overlooking the island of Montecristo, is framed by the small cove-filled promontory of Punta Contessa to the left and the Cape Fonza headland to the right. The closest beach to Camping Casa Dei Prati is Lacona beach, which stretches across more than a kilometre and is covered in soft golden sand that slopes gently out to sea, providing safe shallow waters for kids to splash around in. While the length of the beach has its quieter areas, it's also well served by bars, pizzerias and restaurants, and you can rent yourself watersports equipment while you're there, including sailboats, motorboats and windsurfs. Several diving centres are on Lacona and beyond, some of which offer guided excursions around the seabed's submerged habitats. Also within easy reach are the beaches of Margidore, overlooking Capoliveri village and characterised by its black sandy gravel, and Acquarilli, famed for its crystalline waters and spectacular backdrop. Other beaches and creeks around the Capo Stella peninsula can be reached by boat.
