Does a getaway traversing the streets and canals of Venice by morning balanced out by beach times in the afternoons and evenings around the campfire appeal...? Soak up the hectic vibe of St Mark’s Square in the daytime – then escape from it with a stay at Agricampeggio Mose, about an hour from the city’s main island by ferry. This site in the Veneto region is in a peaceful place, circled by green fields growing the farm fodder you can buy from the owners; toss tomatoes and cucumbers in your salad, roast aubergines and artichokes as appetisers or add some vitamins to your pasta with peppers and courgettes fresh from the surroundings. Pizza takeaways and local restaurants are less than a 15-minute walk away if you’d rather gorge on traditional Italian eats. It's easy to get out and about from here too – the whopping 15 kilometres of sands at Punta Sabbioni’s beach are reachable 20 minutes' walk away, and it's only a few minutes further to Punta Sabbioni lighthouse for views out over the coast. Navigate a little further to Battery Vettor Pisani fort (10 minutes’ drive) for a little look at some of Italy’s 1940s war history. Set your sights on cycling? Bikes are for hire at the park and a path looping around Cavallino-Treporti is accessible a block from the entrance. If a jolly to Jesolo for bars and clubs as well as lots of shops and restaurants and a long promenade for lingering on sounds stellar, it's about 30 minutes' drive away.

One of the main highlights of this park is that venturing over to Venice is a doddle. Organised tours are available if you want to be whisked around the famed architectural sights in the city or you can DIY it, starting with the Giardini della Biennale parkland where the Venice Biennale Art Festival is held before moving over to St Mark’s Square for the huge golden basilica and the Doge’s Palace. More sights to tick off the bucket list include the handsome Rialto Bridge and the Bridge of Sighs, as well as the colourful Clock Tower. Once you’re done with Venice (granted, that might never happen…) the islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello, as well as the pretty cities of Verona and Padua, are all within a couple of hours' drive.
