Hayfield campsites: prime position for Peak District days out
Heading off to a campsite in Hayfield is a fine idea if you’re pondering a Peak District camping trip – the Derbyshire village on the banks of the River Sett is only a fairly wee place but it’s in a most nifty location that’s both right on the edge of the national park and just off the A6. Handy for hikes + easy to get to = quite the winner.
That’s particularly true if you’re tasked with navigating a sizeable vehicle: Hayfield motorhome pitches and touring caravan sites make a most sensible pick for those setting off in a rolling home of some description.

Camping near Hayfield: not just for those scaling Kinder Scout
It is of course the big draw around here – the biggest peak in the Peak District, in fact – but Hayfield campsites aren’t just aimed at folk planning to crawl their way up Kinder Scout*. Nope, you could simply choose to admire it from afar if you wish (it’s still pretty impressive from a distance) and just use Hayfield as a base for dabbles in the Derbyshire countryside.
You might, for example, like to plonk the family down at a farm site or in a wooded area where the nippers can experience the joy of getting to grips with nature. Or perhaps you’d like to pick a dog-friendly Hayfield campsite so you and your pal can get out for long walks on the many trails that run nearby. Or maybe your idea of the perfect balance is a pub campsite in the Peak District? The choice is yours.
The same goes for selecting the list of facilities that fits with your sort of hols: perhaps you’re the placid sort that favours fishing close to home, or you fancy being able to pick up grub at an on-site eatery… or you’ll be needing a play area to keep the tiddlers entertained while you have a little (well-earned) tipple of an evening? * Of course, if you are planning to make your way up Kinder Scout, you’ve got plenty of choice when it comes to places to stay – keep it simple with a wild camping pitch, set yourself up with a couple of drinks by the campfire or (perhaps our preferred option) reward your efforts with a soak in a hot tub and/or a night of comfy slumbers in a caravan, a swish shepherd’s hut, or a bell tent.
Outing ideas for your Hayfield camping break
As pub quiz aficionados are no doubt aware, the Peak District is the oldest of the UK’s national parks – and since it was set up back in 1951 a good deal of work has gone in to making it even more fab as a place for fresh-air frolics.
If you’re around these parts for the walking, you can head straight out from Hayfield on a whole variety of trails, from those steep ones up the side of Kinder Scout to the clever Miles Without Stiles routes that have been plotted out for folk who need things to be rather flatter underfoot or under-wheel.
Crags to climb, mountain bike routes to pedal along and caves to clamber through are all on offer too… and should you start to get a tad overheated you can take a dip at the open-air pool over in Hathersage.
Legs need a little bit of a rest? Check out the Chatsworth Estate for a stunning stately home stroll, take a relaxing ride on the Peak Rail line, peek under the surface at Poole’s Cavern or feast on sweet treats in Bakewell, the home of fine puddings galore. The swish streets of Buxton are only about 20 minutes’ drive away too, if you fancy a stroll around a spa town and/or a night at the theatre.
