Love the simplicity of outdoor life but want a bit of shelter for sleeping? Alstonefield Camping Barn, a countryside barn five minutes’ drive from the village of Alstonefield in Derbyshire, could be the place for you. A stay here isn’t a million miles from a retreat – there’s no electricity (wave bye to your Netflix account for your stay), so there are no distractions from the meadow around the barn and the many trails and bridleways that’ll take you through the hills and dales of this part of the Peak District. From the barn door, you can follow trails to Narrowdale, Beresford Dale and Wolfscote Dale, and on to remote moorland bridleways that experienced mountain bikers can get their teeth into. You can also join the Tissington Trail in nearby Alsop en le Dale or at its starting point in Ashbourne, or you can hire a bike near Waterhouses, 20 minutes' drive away, to explore the Manifold Track (make sure to trek up to the spectacular Thor’s Cave). All such activity is sure to build up an appetite, so feel free to bring along your camping stove to cook in the barn (supermarkets are about 10 minutes' drive away for supplies) then cosy up for a meal in the warm and dry surroundings. If you’d prefer to treat yourself to something more swish one evening, there are tons of restaurants to try within half an hour of Alstonefield. Although there's no shower in the barn, there is a fully plumbed-in toilet and sink for easy ablutions without any need to venture outside.

Liked: We had an amazing and very adventurous stay at the camping barn. What a stunning location and great accommodation. We we brave and stayed at the end of November. We fully expected it to be cold but we did not expect Storm Arwen. We took airbeds and a 13 tog duvet and sleeping bags and managed to get cosy in bed even though the air temperature was very low. It was was very windy and stormy out and we woke up to winter wonderland and a snow-blocked chimney. Phone lines were down across the village and beyond so we walked to the owner's house. They were so helpful! They brought the tractor to clear the road and four huge bags of wood for us so we could keep warm. They even offered for us to move to their holiday cottage and to give us a refund even though the weather was not in their control (we didn't accept the refund). We took a snowy walk to Thor's Cave and had a candlelit dinner and a beer at the Royal Oak. Even though it was cold and crazy, we had the best time! The cold weather was perfect for stargazing too. We will definitely be coming back in the warmer months.
