  • Suffolk farm campsite with smashing wheat-field views
  • A 20-minute drive to Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park, and 30 to Ipswich
  • Peaceful pitches with a fishing lake on site; pub 10 minutes’ walk
Looking to catch some carp on your stint in Suffolk? Situated on a quiet corner of a farm near Ipswich, Wheathill Campsite has a small fishing lake – a fab introduction to fishing for kids as there are lots of carp – right next to its camping pitches. This peaceful field is sheltered by trees and hedging, and there are wonderful views over the valley and wheat fields from the hillside. The shower facilities are spacious and clean, with wheelchair accessibility and a baby-changing mat, and there’s drinking water on site, but otherwise you’re pretty much left to your own devices. Even if you’re not an avid angler, there’s still plenty to do. Get the walking boots on and explore the area's footpaths, which can be accessed from the site through the woods. Middle Wood (20 minutes’ walk) and Bonny Wood (40 minutes) are close by, with a diverse variety of natural habitats – but please remember to stick to the footpaths at all times. Another walk from the site may well lead to the pub – families, dogs and muddy boots are all welcome at the local (10 minutes’ walk), which also doubles as a fish and chip shop, and there’s another dog-friendly pub in the next village of Somersham (five minutes’ drive) too, currently open from Thursday to Sunday. If you’d rather go down the self-catering route, you can pick up supplies in Needham Market (10 minutes), a small market town with an array of handy shops – and a park where kids can feed the ducks. For fishing supplies, there's a great tackle shop 15 minutes away in Great Blakenham.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: The site itself was lovely with a lovely fishing lake, beautiful views and local walks. Very peaceful with basic clean facilities

Disliked: No wash basins in the showers. Only tiny sink in toilets which only had cold water and not enough room to wash in

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Beautiful site in the heart of the rolling Suffolk hills. The pitches are situated around the lake and the views are lovely. A couple of minor issues - our satnav tried to take us up Derrick Hill. DO NOT do this. The campsite sign is immediately next to the hill with the entrance through the farmyard. The hill to access the site is quite steep but once you are there it's a joy. Sarah is super helpful and friendly. There are 2 lovely showers and 2 loos, as well as washing up facilities for campers. Currently only cold water for washing up but Sarah said they are planning to install hot water over the winter months. They are also installing a grey water waste drain in the ground which will be very useful for motorhomers. Grey water currently needs to go in the Elsan point which is uphill so a bit of a trial. The site also has a couple of glamping pods which looked lovely. Very peaceful and beautiful site. Will visit again.

Disliked: Nothing

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thankyou for your review, we are indeed planning to put hot water in the wash up area and a drain for grey water. Look forward to welcoming you back :)

Highly recommend, a basic site with everything done well.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: I LOVE THIS PLACE! Perfect get away weekend. I cant fault this campsite at all. The Nest cabin

Liked: We had a wonderful stay in “The Nest”. Everything we needed was available to us. Spotlessly clean. Complimentary tea, coffee, milk, logs for the log burner. The gas ran out and within 10 mins it was replaced. One evening was much cooler and we were offered more logs for the log burner and a heater. The lake was stocked well and the fishing was very good! Our 2 puppies loved our doggy holiday too! Clean, safe surroundings for them. Sarah & Mike were terrific hosts, thank you. Pub only 10mins walk away, we were made very welcome on our visits! Would definitely recommend and we will return.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Fantastic site with a Great Lake for novice fishing. My boys aged 8, 14 and 16 never fished before and came away with great skills and they caught many fish. Toilets and shower rooms extremely clean. Great views and the most relaxing camping we have experienced.

Disliked: Maybe providing hot water to wash dishes is the only issue we had in the washing area. We had to wash with cold

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thankyou for your lovely comments and feedback. Hot water in the wash up area is on out to do list 👍

Local attractions

If you’ve got kids in tow, treat them to encounters with ridiculously cute goats and sheep at Baylham House Rare Breeds Farm (15 minutes’ drive) and if the weather’s good, there are lots of spots for picnics there too. Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park (20 minutes) is another sure-fire hit with the kids, with anteater handling and donkey-grooming sessions, while you can all try the inflatable obstacle course at Alton Water Sports Centre (half an hour), or maybe have a go at dinghy sailing. Keen to get some more casting practice in? Suffolk Water Park (10 minutes) has a large fishing lake and a bait shop, plus a waterfront café, a nine-hole golf course and putting green for any none-fishers among you. For a big night out, hit Ipswich Waterfront (half an hour) with its riverside bars and bistros, and then catch a concert or an art exhibition at St Peter's by the Waterfront (20 minutes), in a former church.
