  • Peaceful caravan pitches in a nature reserve 10 mins' drive from Selby
  • A 20-minute drive to York and 35 minutes to Castle Howard
  • Eight acres of fishing lake on site, with accessible pegs
Whether you’re planning a stay that revolves around fishing or just looking for a peaceful park where you can soak up the North Yorkshire scenery, it’s worth taking a look at Oakmere Caravan Park and Fishery. This friendly park 10 minutes’ drive from Selby is within the grounds of Skipwith nature reserve so it’s surrounded by wildlife and natural views for a relaxing stay. The Patrick family opened the caravan park back in 1997, and they’ve been expanding and improving the place ever since. The result is some amenities that have been very thoughtfully designed: there’s a chemical disposal point, a large recycling area and a kitchen with washing-up facilities, laundry facilities and a freezer. Bathrooms are similarly well appointed, with a baby changing station, separate gents and ladies toilets and individual shower rooms. Naturally, it’s the fishing that’s the focus of this park – the three lakes cover about eight acres and have mixed coarse fishing options for all abilities. Supervised children are welcome to have a go, and there are accessible pegs for less mobile guests. A lake steward is around all day to offer advice and tips to help you make the most of your lakeside days. It’s not all about the lakes though – there’s plenty of space for kids and dogs to let off steam in the surrounding fields and nature reserve, and there’s a country pub about 10 minutes’ walk away for meals and drinks. A bus stop at the bottom of the drive means it’s easy to get to York or to the designer outlet if you don’t fancy taking the car.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: The owners were so friendly on arrival; the pitches are level, well-positioned and well-spaced with electric points placed at each pitch. The facilities were clean and looked after. The added availability of clothes washing/drying and freezer were brilliant. The surroundings were lovely and only a 5 minute walk to the village and bus stop - only a short drive to park and ride for York which was perfect.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Pitch size was good, fishing was cheap enough and pulled a few out. Water and electric was close by. Good sized freezer and the amenities were ok

Disliked: European hornets everywhere at night around the toilets, nothing for children to do so we made our own swing.

Local attractions

A day out in York is a must – the city centre is only about 10 miles away and easily accessible by car or public transport. When you’re there, take a walk around the city walls, stroll down the Shambles and visit the minster to get a sense of its history, or take a cruise down the River Ouse to see it all from the water. The railway museum, Chocolate Story and Jorvik Viking Centre are all worth some time too. For more intriguing historic buildings, it’s worth heading into Selby (10 minutes’ drive) to see the abbey, and planning days out at Castle Howard (35 minutes) or Brodsworth Hall and Gardens (45 minutes). Meanwhile, to treat yourself to something brand-new instead, head to the shops of Designer Outlet York (15 minutes). If the kids don’t take to fishing, there are plenty of other ways to keep them amused nearby – try an outing to Diggerland Yorkshire (35 minutes) or Yorkshire Wildlife Park (50 minutes), or lose them in York Maze (15 minutes) for a little while.
