Yorkshire Dales destinations for dawdling around when camping in Appletreewick

With its handful of historic houses, the village of Appletreewick is easy on the eye for sure, but it’s not really the architecture that tourists totter here for. It’s the sublime scenery surrounding the settlement, which is plonked on the side of a hill above the River Wharfe and spectacular Yorkshire Dales fells.

Saying that, it’s still worth wandering by the centuries-old stone cottages on the main street, perhaps as a precursor to a hardier hike out on the moors further out from the river…?

Not that the treks are too tricky here. This is the Yorkshire Dales for beginners, with cruisier strolling and cycling trails on offer than in much of the rest of the park. Try the Trollers Gill as a warmup to the tougher Simon’s Seat, a spikey summit 1,925 feet up, which you can easily spot to the east of the village.

After hikes on hot days, rove over to the river for a bite by the banks, a wallow in the water or to troll for trout (permit required). When there’s a chill in the air, country pubs in the area with fires are hard to resist – or you can pick a campsite in Appletreewick where blazes are allowed

Alternative things to do close to Appletreewick include wandering around the pools, orchard and terraces in Parcevall Hall’s formal gardens and taking trips to the 12th-century ruins of the well-reserved Cistercian Fountains Abbey.

Last but in no way least, one of the most well-known Yorkshire Dales attractions, the mighty Malham Cove limestone amphitheatre – of HarryPotter fame – is just 35 minutes’ drive from Appletreewick.

Once you’ve dilly-dallied around the Dales, start planning your trip to another national park in England. The Lake District in Cumbria is always a winner for walking hols.
