  • Peaceful Yorkshire Dales site with views of Pen-y-Ghent
  • A 15-minute drive from Settle; steam train rides pass the site
  • Dog-friendly site within walking distance of three country pubs
Well, isn’t this a really rather fine rural setting – on the banks of the River Ribble and within easy rambling distance of restorative pints at one of Horton-in-Ribblesdale’s three country pubs: how fab... Cragg Hill Farm is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the views from this peaceful place won’t let you forget that for even a sec. Gaze in one direction and you'll hopefully see Pen-y-Ghent towering over the site; turn the other way and you might just catch a glimpse of the Settle-Carlisle Railway trains wending their way through the scenic surrounds. Settle is a 15-minute drive to the south; as well as being the launch point for train rides, it’s also a good place to source supermarket supplies (or have a swim or a game of golf if you’re shunning such mundanities as shopping). For other days out, it’s recommended you look not much further than roaming around the Yorkshire Dales – although you could also consider hitting the coast at Morecambe, an hour’s drive away, if you’re yearning for a bit of sea air. Back at the farm, life is pretty laidback, with no noisome ents to interfere with the peace, just toilets, hot showers and a washing-up area to keep you and your kit clean.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The campsite was relatively quiet as we went at the end of the season. We were able to pitch up right next to the river. The owner was nice when we went to pay for the rest of our pitch. Signs were clearly marked for where you had to go for reception. The toilets were so nice! It was an upgrade for me not having to use a port-a-loo and to actually have a full toilet. The sink to wash dishes was right across from the toilets as well. Water points and bins for rubbish were always nearby as well. You never had to walk far for stuff. I never saw the showers, so I dont know where those were on the campsite (maybe there arent any and I was imaging them haha). Even with some rain, the ground didnt get too soggy or muddy. And there was a clear stone road to get to the toilets so you could walk on that without worry of any slippy grass.

Disliked: Not a ton to dislike. I think having hikers go past along the trail led for a small lack of privacy sometimes. But we could have also chose to not pitch up right along the river if we had noticed that at first. There is a little walk to the toilets, and if it is pitch black at night you need to make sure you have a torch with you to be able to see. The toilet lights werent working either, so you had to keep your torch on while you went to the loo. Even during the day as well. Not a dislike for me, but some people might find it noisy, but the campsite is also right by a train track. I loved seeing the trains go by every now and then, but some do honk their horns so it might be noisy for some.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Excellent stay again (3rd time). Location is perfect just outside Horton with a small field walk to the village. Or alternatively, you can also do a field walk to the pub in Helwith Bridge. Facilities are spotless, showers have hot water. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Definately recommended, we will be back next year

Disliked: Nothing.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The site is wonderfully located on a working farm in the heart of the Dales. Great sized pitches and we were able to pitch beside the river. No noise 9pm - 7.30am suited us perfectly. The facilities are immaculately clean, the showers run good hot water as does the wash up station. Feels lovely and rural and views are fabulous. Great for those who enjoy bird watching and nature too.The Settle to Carlisle heritage train route runs alongside the site and you can board the train from the nearby station. You will need to drive for 15 mins to Settle for supplies, there is no local shop but there is an good pub for food in Horton.

Disliked: There's nothing we disliked about this site, it's great.

Local attractions

This is a mighty fine part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park to be based in, as it’s within easy reach of several fab sights. Malham Cove and Malham Tarn, half an hour away by car, combine to make an excellent day’s walk; the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail (25 minutes’ drive) is another that’s worth walking. If it’s not walking weather, get underground at White Scar Cave (20 minutes) or Ingleborough Cave (35 minutes). Not active enough? Those for whom Pen-y-Ghent is not so much scenery as a challenge can set out from the site for the climb to the 694-metre peak. Follow up by scaling slightly taller Ingleborough (also accessible on foot from the farm) and taller-still Whernside (15 minutes’ drive) to tick Yorkshire’s Three Peaks Challenge off your bucket list. You may like a little sit down after all that (or instead…) and a fine place for that is in a seat on the Settle to Carlisle Railway, which you can board at the nearest station a mile away in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Even if you’re not up for the ride, you may like to take in the view of the Ribblehead Viaduct (15 minutes), famed for many as the route taken by the Hogwarts Express.
