  • Small family campsite at a working farm in the North York Moors
  • Thirsk and Helmsley both 15 minutes’ drive; Castle Howard half an hour
  • Countryside views; walks to Rievaulx Abbey and Sutton Bank from site
It’s not often that you find a campsite with a gorgeous ruined abbey within walking distance, but Wethercote Farm Campsite is that rare beast. Surrounded by amazing open views, this relaxed and peaceful spot is an hour on foot from the atmospheric remains of Rievaulx Abbey. The camping pitches are located on the fields of a beef, sheep and arable farm fringing the North York Moors National Park. There’s always plenty going on in neighbouring fields and there are lots of animals around, including Herdwick lambs in spring and the resident farm dogs. Because of the other animals, your well-behaved canine companions are welcome, but must be kept on a lead at all times. Facilities around the camping fields include a shower and toilet block with hot running water, a washing-up shed and rubbish and recycling areas. Drinking water taps are scattered around the site and firepits are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The lovely market towns of Helmsley and Thirsk are both roughly 15 minutes’ drive away for stocking up on goodies from the supermarkets, and a short drive in pretty much any direction will lead you to a delightful country pub (often with a good food menu).

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Well looked after small site in lovely location, level pitches. Had a hook up as weather is still a bit nippy. Quiet no music policy allows you to escape and enjoy the countryside. Used the off grid shower and compost toilet as well as the mains toilet. hot water throughout and kept clean. Also bought some wood and kindling for the onsite fire pit to keep toasty outside in the early evening. Honesty box for Free range eggs. Nearby walks a plenty

Disliked: It is a lovely area, though there are a lot of long straight connecting paths that if you aren't used to hiking, perhaps are better suited to cycling. Pubs are all short drive away but not easily walkable to

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The site is lovely, great views on a level field. Fliss, the owner was incredibly helpful with directions (we got lost) and very understanding about our late arrival. Single toilet and shower are modern and clean and plenty of other services - fire pits, lots of information about the local area. Despite the field being a bit boggy, Fliss helped us get sited. Cracking WiFi too 😊

Disliked: The wind 😂 but you can’t control the weather

Liked: Very nice set up. Friendly owners.

Disliked: Not a dislike but suggestion, to separate shower from toilet as that would allow more people to use both facilities.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: What an amazing little campsite this is. Fliss was a lovely, polite and friendly host who answered any questions asked. The campsite itself is well maintained, the main toilet and shower areas are clean and tidy, along with the eco/off grid toilet and shower. The campsite itself is surrounded by beautiful views, crystal clear skies on a night due to no light pollution and so a peaceful due to being out in the sticks and no sound pollution. There’s beautiful streams and walking areas just a short distance from the farm itself, beautiful to wake up to the sound of the birds and the sheep in the neighbouring field. Wished we’d booked in for longer.

Disliked: Only thing I can think of is the rain caused some of the field to become boggy but this is to be expected when it’s grass pitches and just adds to the whole camping experience anyway . So just make sure you pack a spare pair of shoes or wellingtons.

Local attractions

Wethercote Farm Campsite is a handy overnight stop for hikers on the Cleveland Way National Trail (15 minutes’ walk), and within a five-minute drive you are at the top of steep Sutton Bank for views of the mid-19th-century chalk Kilburn White Horse; on clear day you’ll also have panoramas right across the Vale of York. At the Sutton Bank National Park Centre (five minutes’ drive), there’s a café, small store and bike hire as well as lots of visitor information about this spectacular part of the world. You can walk to Rievaulx Abbey (an hour’s walk) for a wander around the lovely cloisters, and then move on to Rievaulx Terrace (another 20 minutes) for views back over the abbey grounds. York (50 minutes) is a treasure trove of history, from its Gothic Minster to the medieval cobbled street of The Shambles, lined with dinky souvenir shops. There’s more history to be discovered at Castle Howard (half an hour), the setting for many a TV drama, with tours of the house and gardens designed by John Vanbrugh. Thirsk has also had its moment of TV fame as home of ‘The Yorkshire Vet’ documentary series and The World Of James Herriot (15 minutes), with displays in a vet’s restored 1940s home and surgery – and for a day full of fun on adrenaline rides, head for Flamingo Land Resort (40 minutes).
