  • Dog-friendly two-person camping pods alongside a historic 1555 inn
  • In the North York Moors National Park, 25 minutes’ drive from Whitby
  • Restaurant, beer garden and play area at the pub; bicycle parking
Bet you didn’t think you’d be sleeping alongside a historic 1555 inn in the North York Moors National Park this holiday… and what a setting F and H Camping has. The pods at this site are just the base for getting out and seeing the national park’s protected moorlands, dales, river valleys, seaside villages and dramatic sea cliffs. That’s all from the comfort of dog-friendly camping pods sleeping two adults. Cosy, well-finished and ecologically sustainable, the wooden capsules have heating, lighting and electricity and they’re fully insulated and double glazed for comfort even when it’s chillier. Handily, the beds can be arranged as a super-king double or twin beds. So, take off onto the surrounding bridleways, cycling trails and walks. Then, pay a visit to coastal towns like Whitby (25 minutes’ drive) or Scarborough (55 minutes) or go for a stroll down The Shambles shopping street in York (an hour and 10 minutes), followed by a visit to the celebrated York Minster. A fine British stately home, Castle Howard, is also 50 minutes’ drive away. Back at base, there’s a wash block with a private toilet, shower and kitchenette. Being positioned alongside a historic inn dating back to 1555, you might prefer to relax and dine at the Fox & Hounds’ restaurant or bar. There’s a large beer garden and a children’s play area to do your munching and sipping in the open air. Other facilities include designated bicycle parking and free off-road car parking spaces. Dogs are welcome for an additional charge.

Camping pod

Liked: The area was ideal to visit local beauty spots. We were only there 2 nights but visited both Whitby and Goathland. Ideal walks nearby as we had our two dogs with us, bonus was the pub/restaurant on site.

Camping pod

Liked: The pod was nice and clean in a lovely setting , nice pub on site . Nice clean toilet and showers

Disliked: Separate toilets was a bit of a pain , but the main gripe was the sensor light outside the pod, was flashing all night with no way to turn it off . Also meant when going to the toilet I felt the whole world knew about it. Just the path lights would have been adequate in my opinion.

Camping pod

Liked: Really enjoyed our stay here. Our Pod was comfy, warm and cosy. Plenty of hanging/storage space. Dressing table and chair in Pod, perfect for hair and make up as it was close to the plug socket. Four shower rooms on site so we didn’t have to wait to use one. Water was nice and hot. Chair and hooks in the bathrooms to put stuff on. Pub was busy with events on our arrival at approx 20:30 but we were still offered a table and food.

Liked: Lovely, cosy pod in a beautiful, quiet location. Everything was very clean and well-maintained. The pub was very welcoming - especially to dogs! - and the food was great.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike!

Camping pod

Liked: Lovely clean site, friendly staff. Liked the layout of the toilet block having individual bathrooms, that was very useful. Nice and quiet on an evening and overnight.

Disliked: Nothing much. As others have said could do with stool, shelf or something to put your stuff on in the bathrooms. The pods could do with a bedside table. A fridge in the communal kitchen would have been handy too.

Camping pod

Liked: + the privacy and quiet of the location of the pod + access to nice showers and toilets + great food and drinks in the pub + really close to surf spots such as Saltburn and not too far from Scarborough. + the pod was really clean + it was dog friendly + the staff were really friendly (in particular Sarah was really friendly and helpful)

Disliked: - there wasn’t anything I could comment on not liking it was a great stay and we would definitely come back!

Camping pod

Liked: Loved the pods bathrooms pub pub food and open space for the dogs

Disliked: The pods need a lamp night light. The bathroom could do with more hooks and a shelf. A fridge and microwave in the kitchen would be nice

Camping pod

Liked: Beautiful location. Lovely sized pod, good quality fittings and nice and clean (pod, showers, kitchenette). Nice and cosy and well insulated/sound proofing and curtains kept pod dark in the morning. Kettle provided in shared kitchenette. Nicely surprised to find mugs, tea, coffee, sugar and washing up liquid etc supplied (we had brought our own). Dog friendly! Seeing a hedgehog! First time seeing a live one … Decent breakfast available in Fox and Hounds (needs to be booked in advance).

Disliked: Nothing really. Would have been nice to have a stool in the shower room and also a way to dry hands if only using the loo. Hooks could have been bigger. As mentioned in previous reviews, lights in the pod are very bright and a small bedside lamp would be a nice alternative.

Camping pod

Liked: Quiet location, recently built pods, toilet block and grounds. The enclosed patch of land was great for walking the dogs. Solar lighting on the pathways was good for getting to and from the pod in the dark. Nice hot showers and clean toilets. Great parking area.

Disliked: Would have liked a bedside lamp in the pod rather than just the main lights. A door stop would be good for the pod main door as it was very hot. No phone signal or wifi at the pods. The kitchen isn’t a kitchen just a kettle and sink. No BBQ area and not allowed to cook any food on any gas, electric device. Under the bed had weeks of dust built up. Bins weren’t there outside for general waste or dog waste.

Local attractions

At the end of a stay, you might have hikes, bike rides and beach under your belt. Snap a few pics at gorgeous coastal villages like Saltburn-by-the-Sea (25 minutes), Robin Hood's Bay (35 minutes) and Egton Bridge (20 minutes) to look back on fondly, perhaps. Work up a little sweat on a trail of your choosing too. The Coast to Coast Path (15 minutes to join the route in Glaisdale) was taken by the author Alfred Wainwright. The 37-mile Esk Valley Way (five minutes) runs along the pretty river Esk. Lion Inn Blakey Ridge (10 minutes), a splendid moorland plateau with a 16th-century freehouse, is worth a shot too. For long or short hikes, head to the 109-mile-long Cleveland Way (around 15 minutes). Budding cyclists can grab a pair of wheels from the Yorkshire Cycle Hub (10 minutes), but to travel by steam, trains depart from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Line in Goathland (half an hour). And where else might you plod over to? Runswick Bay (20 minutes) is a sandy beach and Helmsley (35 minutes) is the only market town in the North York Moors. Dalby Forest (55 minutes) is a dream for hiking and cycling.
