  • Family-run and dog-friendly pop-up site on a working farm near York
  • A 10-minute drive to central York, 40 minutes to Flamingo Land Resort
  • No-frills camping field with shops and pubs within 10 minutes’ drive
With a relaxed and friendly environment for guests keen to see what North Yorkshire is all about, family-run Galtres Farm Campsite is on a working cattle farm at Huntington, on the very outskirts of the ancient city of York. Facilities on the level camping field are strictly no-frills – a water pipe and portable toilet but no electricity – and will suit campers keen to get back to basics yet still wanting to be near plenty of things for families to do together. There’s more than enough to keep everyone happily entertained locally, from days out at theme parks to all the kid-centric museums and attractions of York. Dinner time? Pick up goodies for your barbecue (bring equipment with you) from the supermarket at Vangarde Shopping Park, or grab a pizza from the concessions at Monks Cross Shopping Park, both five minutes away by car. Not into cooking alfresco? There are plenty of family-friendly pubs and restaurants within 10 minutes’ drive. If you’d rather simply relax around your tent, no problem. There’s plenty of space for kids, and indeed any dogs (please keep them on a lead while on site) to have a run around safely on the fenced camping field, as well as local dog walk a short five-minute drive away. You could also book your dog onto the dog walking services five minutes' walk away.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: What it says on the tin - a secure field, with a tap for water and an available toilet if required. I was in York for 2 nights, was out from 7am until late so only needed the essentials which is what I got. Host was contactable on the phone when needed. Getting in and out was super easy. No complaints.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Back to basics, level pitch.

Disliked: There was one portaloo for everyone and it was disgusting and smelly. I tried to call the number provided on arrival and couldn’t get through. The grass was not mown, so on a rainy day your feet got very wet. There was a road next to the field which, although not busy, meant we were woken by traffic in the early morning . We stayed on a farm a few days before, for £20 which had lovely clean facilities- no comparison.

From the manager: Hi, I'm so sorry you were disappointed with your stay. We pride ourselves on being good hosts and I'm sorry you did not have that experience. I check and clean the portaloo many times and unfortunately unless someone gets in touch, they can be dirtied a minute after they've been cleaned. (This is unusual however as most people have been clean and respectful) The grass is a bit longer than usual as with all the wet weather we have had we didn't want to create a mud bath and for vehicles to get stuck. Kind regards, Louise

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Easy to get set up, no messing about to get in, information on email made it very easy to access and lovely woman who emailed me.

Disliked: The toilet wasn’t great but took us back to basics for sure, grass could have done with a cut

From the manager: Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed your stay with us! We took the decision not to cut the grass down as short as usual as with all the recent bad weather, many sites have flooded creating a mud bath. we knew that by keeping the grass a bit longer the rain has somewhere to go and be soaked up. Thankfully this has happened and we have had no mud spots or flooding so hopefully you will understanding our reasoning for this. 😊 we hope to see you again in the future! Many thanks, Louise

Liked: Friendly owners, great value for money, one of few campsites to accept single sex groups. Simple setup with basic facilities felt almost like wild camping, family friendly and ideal for those looking for a cheap getaway for a few days very close to monks Cross too

From the manager: Hi, I'm sorry you felt that you didn't have a good experience based on the facilities available. This is made clear upon booking that we are just a grass field with running water and a portaloo so if you were expecting more perhaps next time you would need to book a more expensive site further in advance to secure proper toilets/showers/WiFi etc. Hopefully you enjoyed yourselves and my husband and I are always available to sort out any problems or queries you may have during your stay. Thank you for staying with us and hope to see you again in the future. Kind regards, Louise

Local attractions

Historic York is 10 minutes’ drive from Galtres Farm, with excellent museums (great for the odd rainy day too) including the reconstructed Viking town, complete with smells, at JORVIK Viking Centre, or chocolate-making (and, more importantly, tasting) at York’s Chocolate Story. Other top sights well worth a look include the ornate Minster and the cute cobbled Shambles shopping street, dating from medieval times. Chances are most kids will adore visiting the petting zoo at Piglets Adventure Farm (five minutes’ drive) as well as meeting the creepy-crawlies at The Web Adventure Park (10 minutes). If high-octane days out for older kids are what you’re after, Flamingo Land Resort (40 minutes) obliges with its high-speed rollercoaster rides. Get active with some serious walks in the North York Moors National Park, or sit back in comfort to see the moorland landscapes from onboard a vintage steam train departing from Pickering (half an hour). Add a bit of culture into the mix with tours of the gorgeous apartments at stately Castle Howard (half an hour), or catch the art exhibitions at Georgian-style Beningbrough Hall (25 minutes).
