  • Spacious pitches at a 260-acre Surrey estate near Cranleigh
  • A 15-minute drive to Winkworth Arboretum; 40 minutes to the coast
  • Fishing and social club on site; profits support local charity
A holiday for yourselves, and you get to do good for others at the same time? It’s a win-win situation when you stay at Springbok Campsite, part of a secluded estate on the border of Surrey and West Sussex. The estate is run as a charity that provides accommodation and support for former seafarers, and any profits made by the campsite will be fed back into providing services for the residents. Concerned you may have to sacrifice certain facilities in order to support this worthy cause? Not a bit of it – this is a lovely site that’s part of a 260-acre estate made up of farmland, forest and formal gardens. You’ll be able to take walks around at your leisure, perhaps stopping in at the pretty walled garden or picking up a day pass for some fishing on the one-acre lake. Dog-friendly pitches here are spacious and fuss-free, and have access to basic shower and toilet facilities, plus a camp kitchen/washing-up shack. Guests are also welcome to stop in for a drink at the on-site social club. Barbecue evenings at your pitch are permitted too, if you’d like – there are shops 10 minutes’ drive away in Cranleigh for all the bits you’ll need. (Please note that barbecues must be raised off the ground and disposed of responsibly once they have cooled down.) If a country walk and pub are musts on your rural break, you’ll be pleased to hear that both are on hand – in fact, you could combine both with a stroll to one of the hostelries within a 30/45-minute walk. For other outings nearby you’ll have a choice of heading north to the Surrey Hills, west to the South Downs National Park or south to the coast (about 40 minutes away).

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Wonderful Campsite. Just a few hard standing touring pitches . Arrive and choose which one you fancy. Nice washing up “Cottage” had info pamphlets in there. Great walks from the site. Plus around the grounds and the fishing lake. The social club in the big house was great as well. Very friendly. Chatting to the residents . Very enjoyable stay. Absolutely will return !!!!!

Disliked: Nothing whatsoever to dislike

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Conveniently located, access to clubhouse bar and lovely walks from site. Short walk to local pub and longer walk to Top Gear test track. Basic, but clean amenities.

Disliked: Unattended, without any management; had kids from neighbouring tent running riot between tents etc. Basic facilities, no hot water in the kitchen to wash greasy dishes. A microwave would be a useful addition.

From the manager: Thank you for your 8/10 review! We are very sorry that you had issues with the children. We do ask that children are kept to their own area of the camp, but unfortunately, as with everything, they are not all as well behaved as we would like. We are happy that you managed to get out to the old Top Gear track and local pubs, these are always a good visit. We do not have any office staff here at the weekend. We understand that this is not for everyone, but think that people prefer the cost to be kept low rather than having staff walking around. The hot water issue was discovered and rectified as soon as we possibly could. It was found that the controls had been tampered with, so was an easy fix. We hope that you give us another try soon. Thank You from the Springbok Estate Site Team

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

From the manager: Bedankt voor uw 8/10 beoordeling!

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: The lower field has hardstanding for 10 tourers with electric and water. There is also an upper field with no electric with around 100 metres between them. The hardstanding pitches that we used were good quality although the grass between them had been left grow too long. The upper field which was too wet to be used had the grass cut short. The ablutions (3 WCs + 1 shower in Ladies & 2 WCs + 1 shower in Gents) are convenient for the upper field but not for the lower field. They were very clean although how such limited facilities would fare when the site is full could be challenging. Conversely and bizarrely, the kitchen and wash-up area was more convenient to the lower field where campers were more likely to be self-contained. Also strangely, even though there was a kitchen and 2 portable showers at the lower field, there was no grey water disposal point at this location. 40 litre (40kg) grey water tank had to be hauled 100 metres uphill at considerable inconvenience and effort. Walking to the WC in a dressing gown (normal on a campsite) one has to pass business units and cars. Cars were pulled right outside WCs (with workers possibly from the business units, not campers, by their cars) so the whole feeling is weird. The chemical toilet disposal is next to the tent camping field where campers are more likely to use the ablution block. Turning out of our pitch with a car towing our caravan wasn’t easy as the opposite site is too close with a rock on each corner to prevent drivers cutting corners. Luckily when leaving, the pitch opposite was empty as it would have been very difficult otherwise. Dogs are welcome and there are nice walks. A well maintained but somewhat disjointed site in a mixed use farming/industrial location.

From the manager: Thank you for your 6/10 review! We are very happy that you found some good bits of our site but equally we are sad to hear of the items that were not to your liking. We try to to make the site as welcoming as possible for the majority rather than individuals, Unfortunately we are unable to comment on all of your findings good or bad as we understand that not everyone see's the same things. We do however thank you for taking the time to clearly outline everything from your stay with us. We can see that there were some good and some bad findings and we will take all of them into consideration. Thank You from the Springbok Estate Site Team

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Nice spacious, level pitches. Quiet site with good facilities. Nice little bar in the big house where you can chat to the friendly residents. Many lovely walks out from the site.

Disliked: Was a bit thrown out on arrival at there being nowhere to check in. Maybe a sign to say just find a vacant pitch. Had problems changing vehicle details on my booking from campervan to motorhome. The site said that I needed to do it via PitchUp and they said I needed to do it via the site, although in the end it didn't seem to matter. Having no hot water in the washing up area was a little bit inconvenient. Need to have maintenance people who will come out at weekends. These are very minor niggles which did not prevent us having a lovely stay at the site.

Local attractions

If you like a good garden visit on your break, you’ve come to the right spot – it won’t take long at all to reach the likes of the National Trust gardens at 121-acre Winkworth Arboretum (15 minutes’ drive) and Nymans (35 minutes), with woodlands, a lake and natural play areas. The colourful Ramster Gardens (15 minutes) and pretty Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens (35 minutes) are certainly worth adding to the list too. If you’ve brought the kids along, a trip to Fishers Farm Park (15 minutes) may well be on the cards for tractor rides, mini golf, treetop trails, pony rides and lots of animals to meet (plus indoor play areas in case of dodgy weather). You might also like to see the big birds at Surrey Hills Falconry (20 minutes) or hit the beach in Worthing (40 minutes). No kids in your party? A day at Denbies Wine Estate (35 minutes) might appeal instead then – you can sign up for tours and tastings here, and there’s a lovely restaurant too.
